All must dress modestly in church out of reverence for God and of respect for fellow-worshippers. Ladies are encouraged to wear a veil or mantilla. Tops must cover bodies down to elbows and skirts at least below knees. No shorts, no t-shirts, no leggings. In addition, on Sundays and feasts Sunday best should be worn by all: i.e. suits or jackets and ties for gentlemen, dresses for ladies. Thank you.

ATTENTION: PLEASE NOTE:

The dress code notice above has been on this newsletter for a year. A good number of parishioners have heard the call to Sunday best. We thank them on behalf of all. If you are not yet among those, you are politely asked to consider wearing a suit (or jacket) and a tie (gentlemen), a dress (ladies) on Sundays and main feast. Thus, wearing just a shirt with open collar is better than a t-shirt, but still too casual. Dressing up on Sundays and main feasts is part of normal Catholic culture and worship. We are aware that it has been lost in many quarters of modern society. But it is part of the same values that you seek at St Mary’s. Therefore it is expected at St Mary’s Shrine. Please note that your clergy does the same: wearing better cassocks and sashes and shoes on Sundays, and more precious vestments in the sanctuary. You in the nave are naturally to be included in this shared expression of reverence and joy for the Day of the Lord. As we begin a new pastoral year, let us make a good fresh start.

To receive Holy Communion: one must be a Catholic, in the state of grace, one-hour fasting at least. In the traditional liturgy, Holy Communion is received kneeling (unless unable to) and always on the tongue. Thank you in advance. Kindly switch OFF your mobile phone before you enter the church.

Fr Gwilym Evans writes: Thank you so much to all who assisted at my First Mass at St Mary’s last month and to all those who so generously contributed to the collection for me. The total amount was an overwhelming £1250: a demonstration of the extraordinary kindness that you have shown me over the past months. I am also extremely grateful for the spiritual support that you have offered me, as I was preparing for ordination — for your many prayers and sacrifices. Please continue to pray that I may be a holy priest. I shall remember you all fondly in my prayers, and especially at the Altar. You and your friends are all very welcome to my First Mass in Wales at St Alban’s Church, Cardiff, on 17^th September.

VOCATION NEWS: 12 FSSP UK PRIESTS IN 20 YEARS

Six young men from the UK & Ireland are in formation at our two international seminaries. Three of our deacons from England were ordained priests at St Mary’s Warrington by Archbishop McMahon, OP of Liverpool. Those were the first EF priestly ordinations by a diocesan bishop in England in fifty years. Please pray for them (www.fssp.org/en/help-us/confraternity-of-saint-peter/) and for many more to enter the lists! We give thanks for 12 of priests ordained over the past 20 years: Fr Konrad Loewenstein in 2002; Fr Brendan Gerard in 2006; Frs Matthew Goddard and William Barker in 2009; Fr Simon Harkins in 2010; Fr Matthew McCarthy in 2011; Fr Ian Verrier in 2015; Fr James Mawdsley in 2016; Frs Alex Stewart and Krzysztof Sanetra in 2017; Fr Seth Phipps in 2018; Fr Gwilym Evans in 2022.

THE X-MEN?

As of September 2022, for the first time the number of FSSP priests serving in the UK & Ireland has reached a double figure: Fr Patrick O’Donohue in Waterford, Frs Brendan Gerard and John Emerson in Edinburgh, Frs Armand de Malleray, Ian Verrier, Alex Stewart and Gerard Quirke in Warrington, and Frs Matthew Goddard, Seth Phipps and Gwilym Evans in Reading. Thus, it is now ten priests in total (“X” in Latin) serving souls in these Isles. There will be work for many more!

Please pray for us. We assure you of our prayer.

Over 7,000 pilgrims attended, a record number, including about 40 from St Mary’s only. Thank you to those who gave of their time and money for that cause; to those who sponsored pilgrims; and to all of you who responded to our call and made sure to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament that same day, praying specifically for the success of the March for Life and the protection of unborn children.

The newly started Cenacle Press at Silverstream Priory in Ireland has released a beautiful illustrated edition of Mgr Hugh Benson’s classic novels describing the persecution of Catholics in England under penal times. A timely reminder and an encouragement as genuine religious freedom is under threat even in Western countries.

The Sacred Liturgy as a Secret Garden

In his latest and short book, Fr de Malleray offers an analogy between Frances Hodgson Burnett’s pre-WWI tale for children and the revelation experienced in the 2020s by a growing number of adults stepping into the grace-filled haven of the traditional Roman liturgy.
