Four Last Things Day: any 18-35 welcome on 17 Nov.
Juventutem London Day of Recollection
with Fr Armand de Malleray FSSP.
Saturday, 17 November 2018 11:00-17:00
St Mary Moorfields, 4-5 Eldon Street, EC2M 7LS London
November focuses on the afterlife. On that month, Catholics celebrate the saints in heaven (1st Nov); and intercede for the Holy Souls in Purgatory (2nd Nov). On 11th Nov in Europe, we commemorate the end of the First World War, when victims died on an unprecedented scale. In England, by special indult, a Holy Mass of Requiem is even allowed on a Sunday to pray for those who died in battle. Those various motives are articulated in the doctrine of The Four Last Things: death, judgment, hell and heaven (the latter includes purgatory as its accidental antechamber). Comprising many fundamental dogmas, The Four Last Things is a most salutary doctrine.
During this recollection, Fr de Malleray will address questions such as: Why do we die? Can we change our minds after death? Is God bound to give us a last chance? If hell exists, is it empty? Does it last forever? Can we help souls in purgatory? Are all saints in heaven equal? And many more… During a convivial lunch in the church basement, we will be able to discuss informally these questions.
We welcome any young adults and young professionals 18-35 to attend this day of recollection

High Mass Reminder
On Saturday 10 November at 12 noon, there will be a High Mass of Reparation for the Irish Referendum decision at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Church of the Holy Child and St Joseph, Brereton Road, Bedford, organised by the Latin Mass Society and the Guardians of the Shrine. The Mass will be in the presence of the Miraculous Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose home is at the Shrine, and one of whose titles is “Protectress of the Unborn”.
The Shrine is just a few minutes’ walk from both bus and train stations, and from the Ashburnham Road Long Stay car park at the junction of Ashburnham Road and Midland Road, where you can park all day for £2.50.
Fr Patrick O’Donohue FSSP is the celebrant and he will also give the homily. Music will be provided by Matthew Schellhorn and other singers from Oxford. The Guardians of the Shrine have organised refreshments in the Guild Room behind the church after the Mass.
High Masses are rare and this is a chance to hear one right on your doorstep if you are in the Bedford area. Many people will be coming to a Latin Mass for the first time ever, or after many years. Let us pray for a holy and happy occasion which will show that the Old Rite is truly alive, well and flourishing in Bedford.

All Saints and All Souls
Holyday of Obligation alert!
This Thursday, 1st November, is a Holyday of Obligation, when all Catholics are bound to attend Mass. There will an Old Rite Mass at Christ the King at 7:30pm. We are extremely lucky in that there will also be an Old Rite Mass for All Souls at 10am on 2nd November.
We also get the chance to release 8 (eight) souls from Purgatory!
From November 1-8, a plenary indulgence is granted for the souls in purgatory if you visit a cemetery and say a prayer.
On All Souls Day a plenary indulgence is granted for the souls in purgatory if you visit a church and recite one Our Father and the Creed.
For the indulgences to be plenary, the following conditions must be met:
- Sacramental confession.
- A prayer for the intention of His Holiness the Pope must be recited for each indulgence. One prayer can be satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary, or by praying whatever else for His Holiness’s intention. And no, you don’t actually have to know His Holiness’s officially published intention.
- Reception of the Eucharist.
- You must be free from all sin, both mortal and venial.
This is a good explanation of indulgences:
