In accordance with the recent letter from the Bishops of England and Wales in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the final public Mass until further notice for our South of England apostolates (Reading, Chesham Bois and Bedford) will be offered at St William of York in Reading at 12 noon on Friday 20th March.
You are reminded that the Sunday Mass from Warrington can be viewed on LiveMass at 11 am. See LiveMass.net. While doing so, you could take the opportunity to make a Spiritual Communion such as the one below:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
We shall miss the FSSP priests visiting Bedford in the coming days. You could make a point of praying for them daily by joining the Confraternity of St Peter: https://www.fssp.org/en/help-us/confraternity-of-saint-peter/.
Finally, a lovely quote from Dame Vera Lynn:
“Even if we are isolated in person, we can still be united in spirit. As the war showed us so many years ago, we are all stronger than we think and however desperate things may seem today, remember that we can still be kind, we can still laugh… and we can still sing”.
We announce with regret that in the light of the coronavirus situation, we are unable to serve tea and coffee after the 8.30 am Mass until further notice following guidelines from the Bishops’ Conference and the decision of Christ the King parish. It will be possible to use the toilets in the hall if required and people may wish to meet for a chat without having refreshments.
We remember in prayer those who have died as a result of coronavirus, those who are suffering and those who are ministering to them.
There are a busy few days ahead for the Bedford Latin Mass community!
Firstly on Sunday 23 February after Mass we have our monthly Catechism session, where last time the adults learnt about why the Church ordains only men to the Sacred Priesthood. It is good to have these sort of questions clear in our minds so that we can answer any questions from family, friends and colleagues, and these sessions are an excellent way to learn how to do so. There are sessions for the under 8s and under 16s too. The sessions start at 10.30 am.
Secondly on Monday 24 February we have something new at 9.30 am – a whole hour of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. What better way to prepare for Lent than to spend some time with our Blessed Lord?
Thirdly, of course, is Ash Wednesday itself on 26 February. We have a Low Mass at 7.30 pm with imposition of the Blessed Ashes. This is not a Holyday of Obligation, but attendance is highly recommended!
Pick up a copy of this week’s newsletter at Mass on Sunday – as well as information about what’s going on, there are some helpful hints from Fr Goddard as to how we might keep a good Lent!

Regina Caeli UK Academy goes from strength to strength! Come and see for yourself what this hybrid homeschooling Academy can offer your child at the Open Day on Thursday 27th February. You’ll be able to see the children in action as they take part in a drama lesson, meet the staff and other parents, hear a presentation and ask any questions. Places are limited and need to be reserved: see https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/regina-caeli-uk-open-day-september-2020-tickets-88812718231. Come with your children and bring your friends!
The bell will be ringing again in the church hall at Christ the King on Sunday morning to announce the start of the 2020 catechism talks by Fr O’Donohue. There’s a talk for the under 8s at 10.30, followed by the under 16s at 11.00 and finally the adults at 11.30. Children’s choir will run as usual before the first talk.
For those who are new, we enjoy a cup of squash, tea or coffee and a biscuit in the main hall after Mass before moving over to the Patrick Donegan room next door for our talks.
We look forward to learning more about our Faith and its practice over the coming months.
Monday 6th January is the Feast of the Epiphany. This is a Holyday of Obligation in the Universal Church, but this year the Bishops of England and Wales have transferred the celebration of Epiphany back to Sunday 5th January. Following the Traditional calendar, however, the Mass for this Sunday will be that of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.
To mark Epiphany, there will be a Low Mass at Christ the King on Monday 6th January at 7.30 pm. Although it is not a Holyday of Obligation this year, it is a most important feast, and assisting at Holy Mass is the best way to observe it.
Some 110 people from far and wide came to the Latin Mass of Reparation for Abortion at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe today. This was a significant increase on the number who came to the same event last year.
Celebrant Fr Patrick O’Donohue, FSSP, gave a inspiring homily on Life and how we should consider how better to support it. He was supported in the sanctuary by Fr Gabriel Diaz as Deacon, making a welcome return to Bedford, and by Brother Albert Robertson from Blackfriars, Oxford, as Subdeacon. Two of our Bedford servers, Nicholas and Christian (the latter serving his First High Mass) plus Oliver and Patrick from London and Columba from Oxford, made up an efficient team.
LMS Chairman Joseph Shaw was singing and he also took some beautiful photos: see https://www.flickr.com/photos/josephshaw/albums/72157711905433672 and his LMS Chairman’s blog and tweet.
After the Mass there was a chance to venerate the Relic Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been moved to pride of place at the front of the church. In the Guild Room behind the church there were welcome refreshments and a time to socialise.
We are grateful to the Rector of the Shrine, Canon Seamus Keenan, for inviting the Latin Mass Society to return for a second time – let’s hope it becomes an annual event in future.
Just to remind you of the Solemn High Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Bedford this coming Saturday at 12 noon. This will be a wonderful and rare opportunity to see and hear the Latin Mass at its very best. Sacred Ministers, servers and singers are coming from Reading, London and Oxford to take part in this act of reparation for the many millions of abortions which have taken place in this country since 1967.
86 people came to the same event last year – it would be lovely to see an even larger congregation in the church this year to welcome our visitors from the Latin Mass Society. There will be a buffet afterwards where we can socialise. Hope to see you there!
