500 weekly visits to St Mary’s Shrine Church: half on weekdays and half on Sundays.

Welcome to Deacon Gwilym Evans, FSSP: Ordained a deacon in May, Deacon Evans studied Arabic and Hebrew at Cambridge, during which time he converted from Anglicanism to the Catholic Faith. He then worked for five years in the classical music industry, before joining our seminary in Bavaria. He is a Companion of the Order of Malta and has been very active with them in helping the poor and the sick. He was assigned to St Mary’s on pastoral placement until Easter. We assure him of our prayers during this last stage of his seven-year formation to the Sacred Priesthood.

Church boiler soon mended: new parts are on their way. Seat below the wall-mounted heaters if feeling cold. Thank you for your patience (and penance!).

Thank you for helping us through the Offertory collection and standing orders. While the overall income is still far from covering the actual expenses of the Shrine, it is comforting to see how generously you respond. Some of our worshippers are also involved in other parish communities (Polish, Syro-Malabarese or Ordinariate): we thank them for supporting St Mary’s Shrine as well, where they benefit from daily Mass, Confession and other spiritual goods. Lastly we thank our benefactors who pray with us remotely via LiveMass.net. Some of them live far away and yet, they have chosen to donate online to St Mary’s Shrine according to our needs and to their means. God bless you all.

Support St Mary’s Shrine: send your donation via our Donate page: https://fssp.co.uk/donate/. Ask us for a Gift Aid form to increase your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you. Gift Aid envelopes can be obtained from our Secretariat.  GOOD & BAD News:

Thankfully the sustained increase of our congregation by 100 souls was confirmed. Since Easter 2021 we counted a stable average of 250 visitors per Sunday against 150 until then. This higher number remained stable over the past 5 Sundays according to the archdiocesan annual Mass count: 249.2 visitors exactly on average (all three Sunday Masses included) from 19 Sept to 17 Oct.

The BAD news is that our Offertory collection did not increase in proportion, but paradoxically dropped in proportion. The average over 5 weeks has been £730/week. It is 40 % down on average collection over past years and months, and less than half what is needed to meet the running costs of St Mary’s Shrine. This is without mentioning the significant increase in cost since our purchase of Priory Court. We thank our parishioners who shifted to online standing orders as it makes it much easier for us to process. But sadly the online weekly income is very far from compensating the spectacular drop in weekly collection.

As you will understand, this situation is a most serious concern to us. Our newcomers may like to know that St Mary’s Church, Presbytery and Priory Court are legally owned by our Fraternity, not by the Liverpool Archdiocese, so that absolutely every expense has to be financed by you our congregation whether in the pews or online (we thank LiveMass.net donors). The Liverpool Archdiocese does not contribute to the financial support of the Shrine. Neither does FSSP Warrington own a capital generating an added income. Put simply, unless we receive much more money than currently, we will be in real financial trouble. We invite you to speak with us or email if you would like more information on our needs and how you can help us. Thank you for your generosity.

On All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2nd ) a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls in Purgatory, is granted to those who visit a Catholic church and there recite one Our Father and one Creed. On all the days from November 1st through November 8th inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls in Purgatory, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray even if only mentally for the departed. There must be one visit for each day one seeks to gain the indulgence; one visit will not apply for several days. Any public cemetery with Christian tombs will do. The nearest one is 5 minutes walk from St Mary’s: St Elphin’s, Church Street, WA1 2TL.

Conditions for both indulgences: 1. Only one plenary indulgence can be granted per day. 2. It is necessary to be in the state of grace, at least by completion of the work. 3. Freedom from attachment to sin, even venial sin, is necessary; otherwise the indulgence is only partial. (By this is meant attachment to a particular sin, not sin in general.) 4. Holy Communion must be received each time the indulgence is sought. 5. Prayers must be recited for the traditional intentions of the Holy Father on each day the indulgence is sought. No particular prayers are prescribed. One Our Father and one Hail Mary suffice, or other suitable prayers. 6. One must be absolved in confession the fortnight before or following.

ALL SAINTS PARTY: Sunday 31st October after 11am Holy Mass, during an extended tea and coffee social in Priory Court. Bring a small contribution of food or drink for a shared table if you wish. All ages welcome, young and old! Come dressed as a saint, or with a symbol for us to identify who you are representing.

New Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool came for coffee last week. St Mary’s Shrine clergy were glad to spend time with Bishop Neylon for an informal visit. Born and bred in Warrington, he attended St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School in Padgate and English Martyrs High School in Orford as a child.

Canon Thomas Neylon appointed auxiliary bishop of Liverpool | Warrington Guardian

Our Archbishop publicly supported St Mary’s Warrington in the latest issue of the archdiocesan magazine: “In Warrington we are fortunate to have the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter which was founded by Pope St John Paul II. They conduct their liturgy according to the pre-conciliar rites and offer pastoral care to those who choose that way of worship.” Archbishop McMahon knows well our community whom he visits yearly. However, prayer is very much needed for many other Catholic faithful attracted to the usus antiquior and currently without access to it.

All Hallows Eve – Big Pulpit

A couple of St Mary’s parishioners has been raising money for the Good Counsel Network by walking the 25 stages of the Ancient North Wales Pilgrims Way.  They are now half way through the stages and won’t probably complete them all until next summer. However, they have raised £508 + gift aid so far and really want to raise as much as they possibly can.

If any others would like to join them on the walk they can contact them. You can donate to the JustGiving page by clicking here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jeffrey-hall?utm_source=Sharethis&utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=jeffrey-hall&utm_campaign=pfp-email&utm_term=26d87e2339b54aa0801826e97779178e.

All the raised funds are paid directly to GCN via the Just Giving site.

Congratulations to Ray and Carla Cilia, whose fourth child, newborn Joseph, will be baptised on Sunday 10th October at 10:30am. We welcome the Cilia family who moved from South London last month to be part of St Mary’s community and academy.

Pro-life October

A message from Fr Philomeno James, of the Gosport Franciscans

+JMJ+

Ave Maria

A MESSAGE TO HELPERS

We are trying to take the 40days Campaign onto a New level. This involves the training of Pavement Counsellors who can engage the Mother’s in “Crisis” at the  vigil. There are certain guidelines to follow. Perhaps Jesus and Mary are calling you to this most important ministry.

As part of your response to prayer, if you are called to be generous and try this vital apostolate, then we must mention some important points.

(1) The Necessity to have watched the Msr Philip Reilly Video on “Sidewalk Counselling” before the meeting on Sunday Night October 3rd at St. Mary’s Warrington, given by Justyna from GCN.

The link to the seminar is below:

(2) The generosity to spend 2 hours at the Vigil on either Tuesday October 05th or Wednesday October 06th to be trained as a LIVE Observer of Justyna who will attend the Vigil and provide “on the job” training. This may even involve you to make a shift swap or take some hours off if you work.

Please pray. Please be generous. Please give a voice to the voiceless, our poor brothers and sisters waiting for your “YES”.

God Bless and Mary Keep You All

Fr Philomeno James

However, prayer is very much needed for many other Catholic faithful attracted to the usus antiquior and currently without access to it.

“I am so excited to be joining the Regina Caeli Academy team and feel very privileged to be given the opportunity to bring the Academy to the North-West of England and create a culture of learning in a strong Catholic environment.”

Pippa Curran, Tutor

Our Faternity has been actively involved in Catholic education for decades. The FSSP owns and runs two large boarding schools in France and we also minister to dozen of small and medium-size schools in the world. The newly launched Warrington Regina Caeli Academy answers an urgent need as expressed by many parents. I thank all for their continued prayer and financial support (email theacademystmarys@gmail.com). God bless you.
