THE LORD JESUS IS RISEN, ALLELUIA!
Thank God for a grace-filled Easter Triduum 2024. It was the first time that the FSSP Chaplaincy was able to offer the traditional full Holy Week in Bedford. Despite the very late allocation of a church at an address unknown to most (and at times different from those originally agreed and advertised), the ceremonies were well attended (150 on Good Friday), with worshippers travelling from far and wide, e.g. Westminster, Peterborough, Leicester, Oxford, and Chesham Bois.
On behalf of all, let all contributors be thanked, in particular our visiting clergy Fr Thomas Crean OP and FSSP seminarian Benjamin; our altar servers and singers, our flower arrangers, and all who helped with essential practical preparation such as the Easter fire, the cross pedestal for Good Friday adoration, the advertising of schedule, the lending of cassocks, and more. Those who chose to attend with us this first traditional Triduum in Bedford experienced anew the fraternal spirit stemming from the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and fostered by their liturgical re-enactment in the eloquent Roman traditions of the Church.
Pictures above: Maundy Thursday: after Solemn High Mass and procession, about thirty people watched at the altar of repose, some twenty of them staying until midnight.
More pictures to come…
Easter Offertory collections: unlike in other places across the UK, the Christmas and Easter collections are not retained by FSSP clergy but they are used to meet the ongoing costs of the FSSP Chaplaincy.
(Should you wish to make a personal gift to Frs de Malleray and Coelho, please clearly write “Personal Gift to the Clergy” on the envelope.)
On Maundy Thursday morning, Fr de Malleray and Fr Coelho attended in choir the Chrism Mass at Northampton Cathedral, celebrated by Bishop David Oakley of Northampton, who welcomed permanently in the diocese the FSSP Gregorian Chaplaincy last autumn. The “Roman canon” was used, while kyriale and final Marian antiphon were sung in Latin. Bishop Peter Doyle (emeritus of Northampton) who first established the FSSP Gregorian Chaplaincy in the diocese in 2015, also took part. The pontifical MC was Fr Gerard Byrne. Refreshments followed at Bishop’s House for the many priests present, including a number of religious serving parishes.
Dowry magazine, Spring issue now online:

In this issue:
Editorial: FSSP Superior meets Pope
Following on his private audience two years earlier, Pope Francis met again with FSSP superiors last 29 February. No particular decision was made but benevolence was shown, a comforting gesture for those attached to the Roman traditions of the Church, comments Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP.
A Fresh Look at Courtship
Since most marriages nowadays end up in divorce, and whereas young Catholics have fewer opportunities to meet like-minded souls, a young Catholic layman (attending Juventutem events and recently married) finds wisdom in the traditional way of courtship.
Two Young Women Love Sacred Art
Young convert Rachel Moberly paints sacred pictures to evangelise, and one-of-twelve cradle Catholic Francesca Stevens seeks traditional artistic formation abroad after failed attempts in the UK. Their artistic involvement can inspire other Catholics young and old.
Evangelising Britain in the Digital Age
Webmaster Robert Sławik introduces the website dowry.org.uk. This new tool for evangelisation provides easy access to a wealth of articles about faith, spirituality, family matters and education, liturgy, vocations, history, sacred art and literature published in the magazine Dowry since 2008.
The Spiritual Meaning of Making Altar Bread
A nun in formation at the Cistercian monastery of Valley of Our Lady in America reflects on the process of baking hosts for holy Mass, one of the manual tasks performed by her community. She sees in it a spiritual comparison illustrating her life hidden with Christ.
Picasso’s Guernica or, This Is Not A Corrida
Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP suggests a different title for Pablo Picasso’s famous war painting. Started months before the Basque town was bombed, the picture was subsequently given a title that changed its meaning without substantially altering its composition, though.
Priory Campaign Appeal Update
Rector of Warrington Shrine Fr Matthew Goddard, FSSP explains how the long-awaited completion of the conversion work will provide a versatile hall next to the beautiful Pugin church. Costs rise lead to a final appeal to the generosity of anyone wishing to support this growing traditional apostolate.
Annunciation of Our Lady This feast, transferred from 25 March, is celebrated on Monday 8 April (Low Mass) at 10.00am in Bedford.
Pro Life Chain Sat 27th April, 11am-1pm
SPUC Northampton is holding a Pro-Life Chain on St Peters Way Northampton. This act of silent witness is to remember the millions of lives lost to abortion since the Abortion Act 1967. Please consider joining us at this important event. We will stand together to proclaim the pro-life message. Abortion is a tragedy for babies, mothers, fathers, and society as a whole. We have a moral duty to speak out against the horror of abortion. If you can join us or want more information, then please contact William on 0739 396 5643 (text is fine) or wpcurrie@btinternet.com. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
