PRIORY COURT HALL CONVERSION to START next month.
Dear Shrine parishioners,
On Monday the 9th January, after months of hard work and many prayers offered, we were delighted to issue an instruction to proceed with Phase 1 of the conversion work on Priory Court. This will deliver the largest part of the alteration work, namely the opening up of the entire first floor to create a large but flexible church hall with a double height mezzanine to the middle section, lift access to all floors, disabled toilet and kitchen facilities.
The contractor is SW Projects Management Ltd, a local firm experienced in conversion and construction work and very keen to be involved with a project in their own local community. We have high hopes and expectations for a fruitful partnership with them and welcome their team to our site and community.
It is now over two years since we purchased the whole of the Priory Court buildings and have made good use of them since, but are constrained by their current configuration. The new facilities once finished will open up new and wide ranging opportunities for spiritual and pastoral growth in our Shrine community and beyond. Sadly, we are unable to commit to undertaking the entire scope of works in one go, as costs have risen sharply since the pandemic, but our intention remains to complete the full conversion (as approved by planning), including visitor accommodation on the top floor, in the not too distant future.
This will likely mean re-opening the Priory Campaign appeal nationally to complete Phases 2 & 3 at a later date, but more immediately, we are looking for ways to raise money within our own Shrine community to help plug a smaller gap in our funding for phase 1. This is currently around £40k but could be less should potential savings on the build be realised. If we are fortunate enough to raise more than this target, any surplus will naturally roll over into the funding for the remaining phases.
Whilst we appreciate we are all living in challenging times, we hope you feel able to join us in this challenge and would welcome any new ideas you might have for fundraising. After all, this project belongs to us as a community and is for the benefit of you and future generations here at St Mary’s.
Many newcomers to the Shrine will not be familiar with the original Priory Campaign, as fundraising closed in Oct 2020, so it is also an opportunity to promote the many merits of this project to a new audience and reinvigorate interest in those of us who have supported it from its conception and waited patiently for work to begin.
An open event will be held very soon to present more fully our plans for the building and how the building works will impact on our day to day activity and use of the wider site. We expect this phase to take around 4 months to complete with structural work beginning in February. We look forward to you joining us in this exciting development and sharing progress of this new facility for the Shrine.

Shrine expenses grow quicker than income. This is not surprising since our parishioners are affected by the economic difficulties. However, if you are in a position to contribute personally or to alert benefactors on our needs, even though they don’t live in Warrington, please share our bank account details below with them.
Thank you for helping us through the Offertory collection and standing orders. Should any parishioner be in serious financial difficulty, let them contact the Shrine clergy confidentially.
