FSSP Superiors meet with Pope Leo XIV

Official communiqué of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter – Fribourg, January 20, 2026

Following a request presented by the Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, Pope Leo XIV received Father John Berg in private audience at the Vatican on Monday, January 19, 2026. He was accompanied by Father Josef Bisig, one of the founders of the Fraternity, former Superior General, and current Rector of Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, USA.

The cordial half-hour meeting was an opportunity to present to the Holy Father in greater detail the foundation and history of the Fraternity, as well as the various forms of apostolate that it has been offering to the faithful for almost 38 years. The proper law and charism that guide the sanctification of its members were recalled.

This audience also provided an opportunity to evoke any misunderstandings and obstacles that the Fraternity encounters in certain places and to answer questions from the Supreme Pontiff. At the end of this meeting, Pope Leo XIV gave his blessing, which he extended to all members of the Fraternity.

The Fraternity of St. Peter is grateful to the Holy Father for offering this opportunity to meet with him and encourages the faithful to continue to pray fervently during the thirty-days novena of preparation for the renewal of its consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on February 11.

VOCATION NEWS: 15 new FSSP priests in 24 years

We have currently eight priestly candidates (two are already deacons) from the UK & Ireland, seven of whom are in formation at our two international seminaries. Two of them, James from Hemel Hampstead and Peter from London received First Tonsure and donned cassock and surplice on our 37th anniversary, last 18th October 2025. Three of our deacons from England were ordained priests at St Mary’s Warrington by Archbishop McMahon, OP of Liverpool. Those were the first EF priestly ordinations by a diocesan bishop in England in fifty years. Please pray for them (www.fssp.org/en/help-us/confraternity-of-saint-peter/) and for many more to enter the lists!

We give thanks for 15 priests ordained from or to the UK over the past 24 years: Fr Armand de Malleray in 2001; Fr Konrad Loewenstein in 2002; Fr Brendan Gerard in 2006; Frs Matthew Goddard and William Barker in 2009; Fr Simon Harkins in 2010; Fr Matthew McCarthy in 2011; Fr Ian Verrier in 2015; Fr James Mawdsley in 2016; Frs Alex Stewart and Krzysztof Sanetra in 2017; Fr Seth Phipps in 2018; Fr Gwilym Evans in 2022; Fr Miklos Homolya in 2024 – plus Fr Patrick O’Donohue (incardinated in 2023), Deacon Conan McGonagle (whose priestly ordination is scheduled for 26th May 2026), and Deacon Niall Ó hAimheirgin who joined us last year. [Not all of those currently serve with the FSSP, or in the UK.]

On the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, 11 February 2022, Pope Francis signed a decree confirming the liturgical charism of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter. On January 19, 2026, Pope Leo XIV granted a private audience to the FSSP Superior General and Seminary Rector.

Why we come to the Traditional Latin Mass

An apostolic initiative from the FSSP Gregorian Chaplaincy in the Northampton Diocese, UK

But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every one that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you. (1 Pet 3:15)

Dear faithful, most members of our congregations are fairly or very new to the Traditional Latin Mass. Some come from no religion, some were Anglicans, some were lapsed Catholics, or perhaps attended Mass in the vernacular according to Paul VI’s new missal. It is fascinating and inspiring to hear your stories, your journeys, your motivations, the hindrances you overcame, and the inspiration you drew from your new chosen type of worship in our Gregorian Chaplaincy (cf. northamptondiocese.org/chaplaincy).

More people out there may feel just like you did perhaps one, two or ten years ago. Reading your story might be just what they need to look into the opportunity of the Traditional Latin Mass. Whether you are a family or a single person, email us your testimony. We will include it in a public presentation of our Gregorian Chaplaincy apostolate. It may also inspire benefactors far and wide to support our newly started Holy Family Project Ltd fundraising to acquire a place of worship in Bedfordshire. James Kelliher kindly accepted to coordinate the testimonies on behalf of the Gregorian Chaplaincy. Feel welcome to email him (kelliher@pm.me) between 100 and 500 words using the questions below. God bless you!

  1. First name
  2. How many live under your roof?
  3. How many children you have (if any)?
  4. For how long you have been attending the Traditional Latin Mass?
  5. Do you attend Mass every Sunday (or more, or less)?
  6. What drove you to the Latin Mass?
  7. Do you come from no religion, or from a non-Christian faith, or from a Protestant denomination, or from a Catholic Mass in the vernacular, or other?
  8. What was/has been the reaction of your wider family or friends to your shift of worship (if anything)?
  9. If you don’t attend the Bedford or Chesham Bois Chaplaincy Masses, please specify if you attend the Traditional Latin Mass offered by a diocesan priest, or one of a traditional priestly community formerly known as “Ecclesia Dei” (FSSP, ICKSP, IBP; Marian Franciscans), or even perhaps one without manifest link with the local bishop.
  10. How has the Latin Mass helped you grow in your Catholic faith, in the practice of virtue, in the love of God and the Church, and in your service to neighbours?
  11. What do you wish for the Traditional Latin Mass movement in the future?
  12. By emailing us, you permit us to make public use of your testimony (without your surname). If you wish us to alter your first name(s) for the sake of discretion, please let us know.

1) The Good Counsel Black Tie Ball

Will take place at 6pm on St Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February 2026 in Kensington, London. Live Band. Silent Auction. London’s Catholic Pro-Life Ball raising money to help save lives and change lives.

  • Tickets £135 each. Or a table of ten for £1,300.
  • For bookings and enquiries email GCNBall@gmail.com
  • or telephone 07795205117

Dear Good Counsel Network supporter, we are hosting our annual fundraising Ball on the 14th February, and during the evening there will be the customary silent auction. Over the years, generous supporters have donated a wide range of items to sell such as signed sports memorabilia and books, use of their holiday cottage for a week or weekend, autographed photographs, Russian lessons, and many more.

This year we are again looking for volunteers to help with our auction through donations of any kind. Perhaps you have something to offer us this year? Have you (or someone you know) written a book that you could give us a signed copy of? Could you donate a hamper of some kind? Do you have some other idea or skill (flower arranging for example) that you would be prepared to put into the auction? Maybe, you work (or own) a restaurant or theatre where you could get us a free meal or ticket? Perhaps you have some new item (given at Christmas) which you do not want, such as designer clothes, jewellery or some other accessory. If you can help us, please reach out calling Clare on 07795205117.

2) Thank you on behalf of SPUC for £370.81 raised last Sunday on their pro-life White Flower Appeal (£162.21 in Bedford and £208.60 in Chesham Bois), as the latest abortion figures just released (2023) have reached their highest in the UK’s history with 277,970 for England & Wales only, and nearly 300,000 per year across all four nations.

3) Reminder: Amersham-based pro-life vigil group that prays outside Amersham hospital as there is a BPAS abortion clinic inside. They pray silently for an hour well outside the buffer zone. Next vigil 13th Dec. 10am. Contact Alexandra if you wish to join or for more details: 07531182820

Retreat prayer

Prayer of the “Virtus” Fraternities

“O my God, I approach your infinite mystery and I adore you. Holy Trinity, pacify my heart, make it your beloved dwelling place, the place of your beatifying presence. O Jesus, you who constantly stand at the door of my heart and knock, enter and change my life by the infinite power of your love. Bear my burden, lift up my weaknesses, transform me and unite me to you in an awakened and adoring faith. What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has given me? I will take up the chalice and the cross of salvation, I will offer myself entirely to his holy will. Sacred Heart of Jesus, in whom I place all my trust, never let me abandon you. May every beat of my heart, every breath of my soul, be an echo of your love. Remove from my breast the heart of stone, place there a new Spirit and your Heart of flesh. Be my rest, My strength, and my light for eternity. Amen.
