On Our Lady’s birthday the Church celebrates the first dawning of redemption with the appearance in the world of the Saviour’s mother, Mary. The Blessed Virgin occupies a unique place in the history of salvation, and she has the highest mission ever commended to any creature. We rejoice that the Mother of God is our Mother, too. Let us often call upon the Blessed Virgin as “Cause of our joy”, one of the most beautiful titles in her litany. “Impart […]

Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin; give me strength against thine enemies, and against the enemy of the whole human race. Give me strength humbly to pray to thee. Give me strength to praise thee in prayer with all my powers, through the merits of thy most sacred nativity, which for the entire Christian world was a birth of joy, the hope and solace of its life. When thou wast born, O most holy Virgin, then was […]

The Intention of the Holy Father for September is for parishes at the service of the mission: “That they not be simple offices, but that animated by a missionary spirit, may be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen. Parishes must be in contact with homes, with people’s lives, with the life of society. They have to be houses where the door is always open so as to go forth toward others. On the Feast of the Assumption, 1942, the SS Ohio limped into Valletta’s Grand Harbour, carrying the fuel needed to save Malta from surrendering to the Nazis. The full story of Operation Pedestal is below, courtesy of Charles Debono and published in thebTimes of Malta here. Salve Regina / Sliema Ghalik, Sultana! As Malta edged inevitably towards starvation and surrender in the summer of 1942, a major naval undertaking was being put in train to enable Malta to survive. […]

A reminder that Low Mass is on Tuesday 15th August, at 7:30pm at Christ the King Church, Bedford MK42 0SP. All are welcome! Below is a reflection from Blessed John Henry Newman: Our Lady … died in private. It became Him who died for the world, to die in the world’s sight; it became the Great Sacrifice to be lifted up on high, as a light that could not be hid. But she, the lily of Eden, who had always […]

This Sunday’s Mass coincides with the Feast of the Transfiguration, one of the Luminous Mysteries. Here is a sermon of St Leo the Great, from the excellent New Advent website http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/360351.htm : I. Peter’s confession shown to lead up to the Transfiguration The Gospel lesson, dearly-beloved, which has reached the inner hearing of our minds through our bodily ears, calls us to the understanding of a great mystery, to which we shall by the help of God’s grace the better attain, […]

We are extremely grateful to the FSSP for saying Mass three times in July while our regular priests are away. The first of these Sundays is this weekend, 9 July, when Fr Goddard will visit us. The FSSP are enjoying plenty of vocations and ordinations – most recently, two priests were ordained in Warrington – stunning pictures here : http://catholicherald.co.uk/news/2017/06/20/pictures-extraordinary-form-ordinations-take-place-in-england-for-first-time-in-decades/
