Let us keep our new fellow-Catholics in our prayer. Their perseverance and their faith commitment are an inspiration to all of us!

Last Sunday nine of our young girls made their investiture as wolvets. It is a beautiful and formal commitment made by our children to grow in virtue as part of a strongly Catholic movement. Many adults wish they had had that opportunity.
Thank you to the parents who dedicate themselves so generously to coordinate the events. Let us pray for all our cubs, wolvets, scouts and guides.
Our Lady of Walsingham will this Sunday stay at the home of Rita Carroll and her son Declan. We thank them for including the intentions of our two congregations in their daily recitation of the litany of Loreto before the statue.
Book for Our Lady’s visit: it is a simple and deep way of building up brotherly unity among all of us through a shared focus on Our Lady. Her statue was blessed on the very spot of her apparition, during our community pilgrimage to Walsingham.

Well done 20 parishioners who attended our monthly meeting for all in Chesham Bois last 22 June. The topic on How what we wear hinders or fosters our sanctification and that of other people provided food for thought. For further reading we recommend Colleen Hammond’s book Dressing with Dignity.
The meetings will resume in September after the summer recess.
Further to the talks about the way we dress, may all be thanked for their help in gradual improving of our dress standards especially at Sunday Mass. In particular, let us commit together not to wear sport itemsin church (sport shoes, t-shirts, sport trousers or shorts).

Sun 30 Jun The annual collection (traditionally called Peter’s Pence) for the Pope’s apostolic and charitable ministry takes place on the Sunday nearest to the feast of Ss Peter and Paul. There will be a second collection at our Masses. In accordance with the Fifth Commandment of the Church (“to contribute to the support of the Church”), the offering is a tangible gesture of loyalty to the Successor of St Peter, given for the various needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales has prepared some information and guidance to help inform Catholics how to vote in the election. Please take some time to read it. The Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Nichols, asks us particularly to consider how we can “construct a society in which families can flourish”. In light of that, there are some useful tools on the website of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), including a pro-life analysis of the manifestos of all the main political parties. Last 20th June Fr de Malleray attended with fellow-clergy from the diocese the quarterly deanery meeting in Flitwick, where our congregation attended Sunday Mass for several years (2008-2010), served by the FSSP.

NEW CHURCH FOR WEEKDAY MASSES
Having been asked to depart from Christ the King Church on 21st July, will relocate next month to Our Lady of Ransom, 307 Bedford Rd, Kempston, Bedford MK42 8QB for daily Mass (Mon to Sat) and devotions. Because that church is used only for a Sat evening English Mass, we will have more opportunities to adjust our times for Mass and devotions to your needs. Please email bedford@fssp.org your preferred weekdays and times to attend.
The church sits up to 100, and its car park fits up to 20 cars. It has a kitchenette and meeting room for our monthly groups.
We thank Canon Seamus Keenan, PP of St Joseph & Holy Child and his parishioners for welcoming our congregation at Our Lady of Ransom.
The use of a larger Bedford church to fit our Sunday congregation is being explored and we hope to announce it soon. Please keep praying for a happy and fruitful move.

The saints offer models and examplars of holiness for every walk of life: a particularly worthy focus during this Year of Prayer.
This retreat will pick out some of the great priest saints of Europe – St John Fisher, St John Vianney and St Pio of Pietrelcina – to offer a reflection on the character and ministry of the priestly life.St John Fisher stands as a reformation-era St John the Baptist, most recognised for his objection to King Henry VIII’s divorce of Catherine of Aragon and for his subsequent refusal to acknowledge Anne Boleyn’s daughter as heir to the throne. A cameo ring depicting Aristotle, which belonged to John Fisher, is held at Stonyhurst, having been presented to the College by relatives of Fisher in the 19th century.
The ring will be loaned for the retreat by the College to the CHC, in order to accompany the clergy during this time of prayer.
St John Vianney also experienced the turmoil and upheaval of religious life brought about in his own country, by the French Revolution. Known for his tirelessness in reconciling people to God, he is rightly upheld as a model of a curator of souls.
St Pio of Pietrelcina is widely known for the gifts he received of the stigmata and of spiritual insight, and his profound piety and charity.

First Holy Communions: well done our 16 children who received the Lord Jesus for the first time last Sunday in Bedford and in Chesham Bois, before walking in Eucharistic procession outdoors. Our cubs and wolvets and all scouts and guides processed wearing their uniforms. Four dads of First Communicants carried the canopy in Bedford.
June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Well done all those who attended holy Mass on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart last Friday and gained a plenary indulgence for the holy souls in Purgatory though the public recitation of the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart (Baronius p. 1871).

This retreat will pick out some of the great priest saints of Europe – St John Fisher, St John Vianney and St Pio of Pietrelcina – to offer a reflection on the character and ministry of the priestly life.St John Fisher stands as a reformation-era St John the Baptist, most recognised for his objection to King Henry VIII’s divorce of Catherine of Aragon and for his subsequent refusal to acknowledge Anne Boleyn’s daughter as heir to the throne. A cameo ring depicting Aristotle, which belonged to John Fisher, is held at Stonyhurst, having been presented to the College by relatives of Fisher in the 19th century.
The ring will be loaned for the retreat by the College to the CHC, in order to accompany the clergy during this time of prayer.
St John Vianney also experienced the turmoil and upheaval of religious life brought about in his own country, by the French Revolution. Known for his tirelessness in reconciling people to God, he is rightly upheld as a model of a curator of souls.
St Pio of Pietrelcina is widely known for the gifts he received of the stigmata and of spiritual insight, and his profound piety and charity.

First Holy Communions: The great day of Sunday 2 June has arrived for our 16 candidates who will receive Our Lord for the first time in Bedford and in Chesham Bois, before walking in Eucharistic procession outdoors. Our cubs and wolvets and all scouts and guides will process wearing their uniforms. It will be a low Mass with hymns, followed by a procession of the blessed Sacrament around the church grounds, ending with short Benediction. Four dads of First Communicants will carry the canopy in Bedford.

Deo gratias for 18,000 walking the great Pentecost pilgrimage from Paris to Chartres 18-20 May, including about 20 members of our two congregations.
The largest ever Pilgrimage of Christendom took place on the weekend of Pentecost 2024 from Paris to Chartres: 18,000 pilgrims, including 440 clerics (of whom 140 FSSP priests and seminarians). Plus 1,000 volunteers for the logistics only. Final Mass and homily inside Chartres Cathedral by Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, Prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Over 200 pilgrims from the UK, including nearly 20 from the FSSP Chaplaincy in Bedford & Chesham Bois, with Fr Armand de Malleray (arriving after offering our two Sunday Masses in England). Well done all pilgrims! Our Lady of Chartres, pray for us! “Chartres sonne, Chartres t’appelle, gloire, honneur au Christ Roi!”

CHESTERTON NEWS: GK Chesterton was born 150 years ago, on the 29th May 1874 on Campden Hill, Kensington. He went on to become a renowned journalist and author of more than 100 books. He is perhaps best remembered today for his crime fiction stories about Father Brown. On the 30th July 1922 he was received into the Catholic Church and over the following years became one of the most prolific and eloquent defenders of the faith, attracting many converts in his lifetime and many more after his death in 1936. Cardinal Pacelli, the Vatican Secretary of state and the future Pope Pius the XII, sent a telegram on behalf of Pope Pius the XI, to the Archbishop of Westminster on the occasion of Chesterton’s death, which described Chesterton as a gifted Defender of the Catholic Faith. Chesterton was a strong opponent of eugenics, as shown in his ‘Eugenics and Other Evils’ before the Nazi’s rose to power but when ‘respectable’ politicians all over Europe were still publicly supporting the eugenics movement. Some of his major works are ‘Orthodoxy’ and ‘The Everlasting Man’ as well as biographies of St Francis of Assisi and St Thomas Aquinas. There is an Annual GK Chesterton Walking Pilgrimage from Notting Hill to Beaconsfield. It takes place on the nearest Saturday to the anniversary of GKC’s Conversion. 2 lovely processions and crownings of Our Lady
On Sunday 12 May 2024 after the 8:30am holy Mass, the FSSP Chaplaincy congregation at Christ the King Church in Bedford processed to the nearby garden singing hymns to Our Lady. Many children were wearing their scout and guide uniforms. One of them carried a crown of flowers to be put on the head of Our Lady outdoors. The clergy and laity arrived in front of the statue, that was crowned by the chaplain and incensed. The chaplain reminded all of the meaning of that devotion, namely, to rejoice in the queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary over us and to seek her guidance and protection in all things. Refreshments followed in the parish hall. The same took place after the 12noon holy Mass in Bedford.

Please especially pray and fast that abortion up to birth will not become legal in the UK. Fasting Fast from all food except bread and water for the day Or Fast from a particular food or luxury, e.g. chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes, TV. Fast from whatever you can given your state of health etc, but make sure it is something that involves a sacrifice to yourself.
Prayer We are asking people to say a Rosary (or an extra Rosary if you say it daily already).
You could also offer an extra effort such as going to Mass (or an extra Mass) on the day, or going to Adoration. You can even pray before a closed tabernacle if Adoration is not available near you.

Dear Supporter Hundreds gathered in Parliament Square on May 15th as the Criminal Justice Bill went to the report stage in Parliament. Pro-life organisations from across the country united under one banner of ‘No, to abortion up to birth!’ and were joined throughout the rally by various MPs including Carla Lockhart, Ian Paisley and Daniel Kawczynski
Four amendments tabled to the bill could dramatically affect the abortion law in the UK. Amendments from MPs Stella Creasy and Diane Johnson could see the introduction of abortions up to birth as well as sex-selective abortions happening at a great risk to the physical and mental health of women and of course with complete disregard to preborn children.
Two of the amendments could potentially limit abortions, with MP Liam Fox asking for babies with down syndrome not to be allowed to be aborted after 24 weeks (in keeping with the rest of the abortion law) and MP Caroline Ansell asking for a reduction in law for abortions generally from 24 weeks to 22 weeks in keeping with improvements for the survival rate of premature babies.
The prolife movement presented a united front. Representatives from these organisations were present in Parliament Square and spoke to the crowd: Abortion Resistance, ADFUK CBRUK, Christian Concern, Citizen Go, The Good Counsel Network, 40 Days for Life, Rachel’s Vineyard, Right to Life, SPUC, Voice for Justice and of course, March for Life UK.
The statement from March for Life UK read as follows: “The fact that abortions are largely illegal after 24 weeks is something that not only saves the lives of preborn children in later gestation but also helps protect the health, both physically and mentally, of women. We need to take a serious and honest look at the root causes of later term illegal abortions – how are they being enabled? It’s time to remove the smokescreen of counterfeit compassion and look at what really constitutes healthcare. Abortion providers themselves are dishing out abortion pills through the post, something which is impossible to do in a manner in keeping with the wellbeing of women.
Rather than further liberalising our abortion laws we need to ensure there’s sufficient support for women and couples who are facing challenging pregnancies or who are feeling overwhelmed by parenthood. For those who do break the law, justice doesn’t have to be handed out like a tonne of bricks, it can be administered sensitively and appropriately but no woman should be going through the ordeal of a late term abortion and dealing with the aftermath, particularly in the isolation of her own home which is what will end up happening more frequently if so called ‘decriminalisation’ is enacted. We stand united, We stand firm in saying ‘No, to abortion up to birth!’”

William Currie, new Safeguarding Representative for FSSP Bedford and Chesham Bois. William is married with four children and lives in Northampton. He has attended the Latin Mass at Christ the King for eight years. He retired from Northamptonshire Police in 2017, after thirty years of service and has extensive practical experience in dealing with safeguarding issues involving adults at risk and young people. William will ensure that there are robust safeguarding protocols in place in order to protect everyone in the Apostolate. Easter Duty: All Catholics (who have already made First Communion) have the grave obligation to confess serious sin and receive Holy Communion during the paschal season, which ends on Trinity Sunday (26 May).
Sunday Coffee under threat… We need more volunteers to help with tea and coffee after the Bedford 8:30am Sunday Mass, or this may not be able to continue. Help to tidy the hall at the end of tea and coffee would also be welcome.

Trad triplets? Or nearly. On Sat 4 May, feast of the Holy Martyrs of England & Wales, three families in three FSSP England apostolates had the joy of childbirth. Congratulations to Simon and Isabelle Lubbock (Bedford) on the happy birth of their daughter Marie-Heloise and her baptism on 11 May; to Brandon and Isabella Barkowski (Chesham Bois) on the birth of their son Damian and his baptism on 12 May; and to Demetri and Maisie Newman-Brown (Warrington) on the birth of their first child.

Dear Supporter Hundreds gathered in Parliament Square on May 15th as the Criminal Justice Bill went to the report stage in Parliament.
