First Holy Communions: The great day of Sunday 2 June has arrived for our 16 candidates who will receive Our Lord for the first time in Bedford and in Chesham Bois, before walking in Eucharistic procession outdoors. Our cubs and wolvets and all scouts and guides will process wearing their uniforms. It will be a low Mass with hymns, followed by a procession of the blessed Sacrament around the church grounds, ending with short Benediction. Four dads of First Communicants will carry the canopy in Bedford.

Photos can be taken at the end.

From Ireland Fr Coelho wrote: “I hope everything goes well tomorrow and I pray for the little ones that will receive Jesus for the first time, so that they can live in a way that allows them to be always prepared to receive Jesus and that each communion makes them more united to Jesus, the only thing that matters in this world.”

To honour Our Lord carried outdoors, and as a pious consideration in this warmer weather, all adults, teenagers and children are kindly requested to wear their Sunday best (chest, back, legs and shoulders covered; dresses and mantillas welcome for ladies; suit and ties welcome for gentlemen; no sport shoes or casual attire; avoid clothes displaying worldly or commercial signs or brands). Thank you.

Well done our 16 children who made their First Confession with Fr de Malleray on 25 May.
Please pray for their last week of preparation until First Holy Communions on Sunday 2 June at the Bedford 8:30am Mass, followed by short Eucharistic procession and benediction.

Easter Duty: All Catholics (who have already made First Communion) have the grave obligation to confess serious sin and receive Holy Communion during the paschal season, which ends on Trinity Sunday (26 May).

CORPUS CHRISTI this week:
The feast is on Thursday 30 May, with holy Mass at 8:00am at Christ the King Church. It is not of obligation but attending holy Mass on the day is highly commendable.
In addition, we will solemnise Corpus Christi on the Sunday following, 2 June. It will be a low Mass with hymns, followed by a procession of the blessed Sacrament around the church grounds, ending with short Benediction. Our First Communicants will receive the Lord Jesus in holy Communion at that Mass, and will walk in the procession as a group after. Photos can be taken at the end.

Our cubs and wolvets and all scouts and guides will process (to be confirmed)  wearing their uniforms.
It is permitted to carry a banner of the Blessed Sacrament: if anyone has such a banner, please contact the chaplain beforehand.
Bearers of the (light) canopy will also be called for (men wearing suits and ties).

CHESTERTON NEWS:
GK Chesterton was born 150 years ago, on the 29th May 1874 on Campden Hill, Kensington. He went on to become a renowned journalist and author of more than 100 books. He is perhaps best remembered today for his crime fiction stories about Father Brown. On the 30th July 1922 he was received into the Catholic Church and over the following years became one of the most prolific and eloquent defenders of the faith, attracting many converts in his lifetime and many more after his death in 1936.
Cardinal Pacelli, the Vatican Secretary of state and the future Pope Pius the XII, sent a telegram on behalf of Pope Pius the XI, to the Archbishop of Westminster on the occasion of Chesterton’s death, which described Chesterton as a gifted Defender of the Catholic Faith.
Chesterton was a strong opponent of eugenics, as shown in his ‘Eugenics and Other Evils’ before the Nazi’s rose to power but when ‘respectable’ politicians all over Europe were still publicly supporting the eugenics movement.
Some of his major works are ‘Orthodoxy’ and ‘The Everlasting Man’ as well as biographies of St Francis of Assisi and St Thomas Aquinas.
There is an Annual GK Chesterton Walking Pilgrimage from Notting Hill to Beaconsfield. It takes place on the nearest Saturday to the anniversary of GKC’s Conversion. Email us for details, CatholicGKCSociety@yahoo.co.uk
Chesterton’s Apologetics and Novels, Biographies and Essays, Poetry and Plays and etc. Many can be found online for free see our website for details: www.catholicgkchestertonsociety.co.uk

Singing his Hymn, ‘O God of Earth and Altar’, would no doubt be a very good idea as well.

God bless

Stuart McCullough
God Our Father, Thou didst fill the life of Thy servant Gilbert Keith Chesterton with a sense of wonder and joy, and gave him a faith which was the foundation of his ceaseless work, a charity towards all men, particularly his opponents, and a hope which sprang from his lifelong gratitude for the gift of human life. May his innocence and his laughter, his constancy in fighting for the Christian faith in a world losing belief, his lifelong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his love for all men, especially for the poor, bring cheerfulness to those in despair, conviction and warmth to lukewarm believers and the knowledge of God to those without faith. We beg Thee to grant the favours we ask through his intercession, the end of abortion in this Country [and especially for……] so that his holiness may be recognized by all and the Church may proclaim him Blessed. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Catholicgkchestertonsociety.co.uk

PRO-LIFE NEWS:

Dear Pro-Life supporter

On Tuesday 21st May, the Vigil of Saint Rita, please pray and fast for the end of abortion and euthanasia in this country. Please especially pray and fast that abortion up to birth will not become legal in the UK. Facebook has put a limit on the number of people we can Invite to join the day, so please use the INVITE option on Facebook to let others know about this day, https://www.facebook.com/events/1590210478486255/

Fasting
Fast from all food except bread and water for the day
Or
Fast from a particular food or luxury, e.g. chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes, TV.
Fast from whatever you can given your state of health etc, but make sure it is something that involves a sacrifice to yourself.

Prayer
We are asking people to say a Rosary (or an extra Rosary if you say it daily already).

You could also offer an extra effort such as going to Mass (or an extra Mass) on the day, or going to Adoration. You can even pray before a closed tabernacle if Adoration is not available near you.

God bless

Stuart McCullough

Dear Supporter   Hundreds gathered in Parliament Square on May 15th as the Criminal Justice Bill went to the report stage in Parliament. Pro-life organisations from across the country united under one banner of ‘No, to abortion up to birth!’ and were joined throughout the rally by various MPs including Carla Lockhart, Ian Paisley and Daniel Kawczynski

Four amendments tabled to the bill could dramatically affect the abortion law in the UK. Amendments from MPs Stella Creasy and Diane Johnson could see the introduction of abortions up to birth as well as sex-selective abortions happening at a great risk to the physical and mental health of women and of course with complete disregard to preborn children.

Two of the amendments could potentially limit abortions, with MP Liam Fox asking for babies with down syndrome not to be allowed to be aborted after 24 weeks (in keeping with the rest of the abortion law) and MP Caroline Ansell asking for a reduction in law for abortions generally from 24 weeks to 22 weeks in keeping with improvements for the survival rate of premature babies.

The prolife movement presented a united front. Representatives from these organisations were present in Parliament Square and spoke to the crowd: Abortion Resistance, ADFUK CBRUK, Christian Concern, Citizen Go, The Good Counsel Network, 40 Days for Life, Rachel’s Vineyard, Right to Life, SPUC, Voice for Justice and of course, March for Life UK.

The statement from March for Life UK read as follows:
“The fact that abortions are largely illegal after 24 weeks is something that not only saves the lives of preborn children in later gestation but also helps protect the health, both physically and mentally, of women. We need to take a serious and honest look at the root causes of later term illegal abortions – how are they being enabled? It’s time to remove the smokescreen of counterfeit compassion and look at what really constitutes healthcare.
Abortion providers themselves are dishing out abortion pills through the post, something which is impossible to do in a manner in keeping with the wellbeing of women.

Rather than further liberalising our abortion laws we need to ensure there’s sufficient support for women and couples who are facing challenging pregnancies or who are feeling overwhelmed by parenthood. For those who do break the law, justice doesn’t have to be handed out like a tonne of bricks, it can be administered sensitively and appropriately but no woman should be going through the ordeal of a late term abortion and dealing with the aftermath, particularly in the isolation of her own home which is what will end up happening more frequently if so called ‘decriminalisation’ is enacted. We stand united, We stand firm in saying ‘No, to abortion up to birth!’”

Watch the speeches here:   DONATE TODAY                               Please keep praying for this, thank you for all your support.

God bless
Ben, Sarah and Isabel   DONATE TODAY

Our Lady of Walsingham has become a pilgrim in her turn as her statue is now entrusted to one household in our congregation at a time, for veneration during a week, until passed on by the chaplain to another household. Book your week on the sign-up sheet after holy Mass this Sunday.

It is one of the few days of obligation. This means that every able Catholic must attend holy Mass on that day, just as if it were a Sunday. Due to shortage of clergy, we will only be able to have holy Mass in Bedford at 8:00am, and in Chesham Bois at 7:00pm. Please take your dispositions to attend one or the other, or some other Mass more convenient for you and your family to travel to. If you or members of your household are genuinely prevented from attending holy Mass on Thursday 5 May, then you are dispensed from the obligation and you incur no sin; but you must take extra time at home to pray on that day, preferably through reading the prayers of the Mass from your missal for the feast of the Ascension.

About one hundred adults and children took part in the successful Spring Barn Dance 2024 organised by George and Heather Tyldesley on 27 April. Participants travelled from far and wide, including Reading, Bedford and Chesham Bois. Traditional English country dances were taught by an expert dance master, and ably performed by all (after some practice). In preparation, some children had helped cut out and colour beautiful flowers used later on to decorate the hall. It was a very enjoyable occasion and a valued opportunity for members of the FSSP Northampton congregations to spend time together in an extra-liturgical setting. We look forward to next year’s edition.

SUCCESSFUL WALSINGHAM PILGRIMAGE attended by 62 pilgrims!

See great pics of the pilgrimage here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/138056205@N08/albums/72177720316449634

Last Sat 20 April, 62 pilgrims from Bedford and Chesham Bois travelled to the national shrine of Our Lady in Walsingham to ask for the protection of the Mother of God upon our congregations, families and friends. The weather was cold but no rain fell. After Holy Mass and a conference on Our Lady and the Incarnation, the pilgrims visited the Slipper Chapel and walked back the Holy Mile praying the Holy Rosary. Picnic followed the village. They later visited the ruins of Walsingham Priory. There, a statue of Our Lady of Walsingham was blessed by the chaplain and all prayed the litany of Loreto in front of the statue positioned right under the remaining arch of the church, before being blessed by the chaplain holding the statue. The pilgrims later visited the beautiful Anglican shrine where they also prayed for the conversion of England, before travelling back home. Our Lady of Walsingham will become a pilgrim in her turn as her statue will be entrusted to one household in our congregation at a time, for veneration during a week, until passed on by the chaplain to another household. Book your week on the sign-up sheet after holy Mass this Sunday.

Well done 23 Catholic single ladies who travelled to Tyburn Convent in London on 13 April to attend a day of vocational discernment led by Fr de Malleray.

SEE PICS HERE: https://www.flickr.com/photos/138056205@N08/albums/72177720316227716/

The day consisted of three conferences, on holy Matrimony, on religious life and on the difference between contemplative and apostolic vocations; plus holy Mass, picnic in Hyde Park and litany of Our Lady prayed at the Tyburn Tree where many Catholic martyrs had died for the faith; and also a testimony by one of the Tyburn nuns. Please pray for a strong revival of religious life across these Isles, and for the young ladies and young men who have recently answered the call, or prepare to do so.
