All Saints and All Souls

Holyday of Obligation alert!

This Thursday, 1st November, is a Holyday of Obligation, when all Catholics are bound to attend Mass. There will an Old Rite Mass at Christ the King at 7:30pm. We are extremely lucky in that there will also be an Old Rite Mass for All Souls at 10am on 2nd November.

We also get the chance to release 8 (eight) souls from Purgatory!

From November 1-8, a plenary indulgence is granted for the souls in purgatory if you visit a cemetery and say a prayer.

On All Souls Day a plenary indulgence is granted for the souls in purgatory if you visit a church and recite one Our Father and the Creed.

For the indulgences to be plenary, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Sacramental confession.
  2. A prayer for the intention of His Holiness the Pope must be recited for each indulgence. One prayer can be satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary, or by praying whatever else for His Holiness’s intention. And no, you don’t actually have to know His Holiness’s officially published intention.
  3. Reception of the Eucharist.
  4. You must be free from all sin, both mortal and venial.

This is a good explanation of indulgences:

News sheet goes live!

It has been suggested that the weekly news sheet distributed at Christ the King, Bedford appears on the blog and thereby on Facebook.  Here is the first one from yesterday.  Future editions will be published during the preceding week so that any information relating to the Sunday Mass is available beforehand.

New ‘FSSP’ Priest in England

https://fssp.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/oDon.jpg

Spotted on FSSP England Facebook dated 1 October:

Congratulations to Fr Patrick O’Donohue, to whom the FSSP General Council granted first incorporation into our Fraternity last month.

Fr O’Donohue has just completed his year of postulancy at Reading and we at Bedford wish him well in this next stage.  We look forward to getting to know him better as he celebrates the Mass and leads Catechism Days with us.

Rosary Sunday – another sung Mass!

Matthew Schellhorn will be singing Mass for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, set on October 7th in commemoration of the battle of Lepanto:

Scarlet running over on the silvers and the golds,

Breaking of the hatches up and bursting of the holds,

Thronging of the thousands up that labour under sea

White for bliss and blind for sun and stunned for liberty.

NB the Catechism day is next Sunday, 14th October, when Fr. O’Donohue is back.
