—————————- VOCATION NEWS: 11 FSSP UK PRIESTS IN 16 YEARS
We have currently six young men from England & Wales in formation at our two international seminaries. Three of our deacons from England were ordained priests at St Mary’s Warrington in the past two years by Archbishop McMahon, OP of Liverpool. Those were the first EF priestly ordinations by a diocesan bishop in England in fifty years.
In total, 45 young men were admitted into our two seminaries this autumn including 3 from England and Ireland.
We give thanks for 1 new priest from the UK ordained every year over the past 4 years, and more generally for 11 of them ordained over the past 16 years: Fr Konrad Loewenstein in 2002; Fr Brendan Gerard in 2006; Frs Matthew Goddard and William Barker in 2009; Fr Simon Harkins in 2010; Fr Matthew McCarthy in 2011; Fr Ian Verrier in 2015; Fr James Mawdsley in 2016; Frs Alex Stewart and Krzysztof Sanetra in 2017; Fr Seth Phipps last year.
Manchester City Council are consulting on a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in the area surrounding the abortion facility in Fallowfield, Manchester. This would ban peaceful prayer vigils and the offering of help in the vicinity of the facility. We have seen over 100 women change their minds and choose life for their unborn children as a result of these vigils in Manchester,if you have been to a vigil please respond to the consultation online at http://www.manchester.gov.uk/consultations or if you haven’t you can email: asb.action.team@manchester.gov.uk to express your opposition to the PSPO.

Reminder on All Saints: “On Sundays and other holy
days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass.” (cf Catholic Code of Canon Law, 1247). A
grave cause is needed to excuse from the obligation. In case of doubt, consult
your priest in advance. Missing Holy Mass on those days without a grave cause
is a mortal sin.
On All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2nd ) a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls in Purgatory, is granted to those who visit a Catholic church and there recite one Our Father and one Creed.
On all the days from November 1st through November 8th inclusive, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls in Purgatory, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray even if only mentally for the departed. There must be one visit for each day one seeks to gain the indulgence; one visit will not apply for several days. Any public cemetery with Christian tombs will do. The nearest one is 5 minutes walk from St Mary’s: St Elphin’s, Church Street, WA1 2TL.
Conditions for both indulgences:
1. Only one plenary indulgence can be granted per day.
2. It is necessary to be in the state of grace, at least by completion of the work.
3. Freedom from attachment to sin, even venial sin, is necessary; otherwise the indulgence is only partial. (By this is meant attachment to a particular sin, not sin in general.)
4. Holy Communion must be received each time the indulgence is sought.
5. Prayers must be recited for the traditional intentions of the Holy Father on each day the indulgence is sought. No particular prayers are prescribed. One Our Father and one Hail Mary suffice, or other suitable prayers.
6. One must be absolved in confession the fortnight before or following.
Autumn Count:
1) Average number of Confessions heard per week: 2015: 14; 2016: 32; 2017: 30; 2018: 45; 2019: 48.5.
2) Average Sunday attendance: 2017: 148; 2018: 159.5; 2019: 168.

Deo
gratias for the canonisation of Cardinal John-Henry Newman in
Rome on Sun. 13th Oct: may his intercession for the conversion of
Britain be even more efficacious. This Sunday we are also invited by our
Archbishop Malcolm McMahon to pray for the success of the Archdiocesan Synod 2020 [synod2020.co.uk], in which St Mary’s
clergy and laity have been involved in various ways. His Grace’s pastoral
letter is available here and at St Mary’s, as well as Synod prayer
cards.
Prayer
for the Pan-Amazon Synod (Rome, 6-27 October): We at St Mary’s will
recite daily the Prayer to St Michael the
Archangel from 29th Sept. until 27th Oct., begging
for heavenly protection upon Holy Mother Church in turbulent times. We invite
all to fast every Friday for the same intention during that period.
St
Mary’s youths take steps:
1)
Please keep in your prayer our young parishioner Henry who started formation to the priesthood at our American seminary,
together with Conan from Ireland (and of Warrington) and Tom from London. Fr Verrier
took them out for an ice-cream while staying in Nebraska last week and confirms
that the three young men are very assiduous at Latin classes and on the ‘soccer’
pitch! 2) Also, pray for one of our young ladies who went to the
Franciscan Nuns in Gosport to begin religious training. 3) Lastly, three of our
young men have moved together into a shared flat to support each other
through a life of piety with daily involvement in the Shrine activities. Contact
us if you can give or lend furniture, utensils etc.
Sunday 20th

establishment of the FSSP as of pontifical right the entire congregation recites
together after Mass the Prayer for

for Vocations, the Confraternity of St Peter(C.S.P.). CSP members
may come and recite the Prayer of the
Confraternity while kneeling at the communion rail before receiving a blessing
from the priest. Learn more about the prayer for vocations here:

CLERGY RETREAT 27
APRIL -1 MAY 2020, STONYHURST The priests and Holy
Church: her sons and defenders.
In the brand new retreat centre in historic Jesuit college in Lancashire. Make use of the Theodore House Oratory or St Peter’s church for private prayer and Holy Mases, adoration and Compline. Enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside with its network of footpaths. Comfortable en-suite accommodation makes Theodore House a fantastic retreat setting!
• Clergy Retreat 27 April – 1st May 2020 • Arrival by 3pm on Monday 27th April 2020 • Departure 3pm on Friday 1st May 2020 • Theme: The priests and Holy Church: her sons and defenders. • Preached by: Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP • For: Any diocesan and religious clerics, including deacons and seminarians • Daily Mass (missal of your choice), Holy Hour and Latin Compline
Scope: Holy Church is under attack and her priests undermined. Can we still profess the Church as holy and the priesthood as sacred? The traditional ecclesiology, spirituality and liturgy explain why the sins of her sons wound the Bride of Christ and yet do not mar her purity, neither invalidate their calling. After the example of the Sovereign High Priest Jesus Christ, today as ever, priestly sanctity is essential to the welfare of Holy Church.

• Clergy Retreat 27 April – 1st May 2020 • Arrival by 3pm on Monday 27th April 2020 • Departure 3pm on Friday 1st May 2020 • Theme: The priests and Holy Church: her sons and defenders. • Preached by : Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP • For: Any diocesan and religious clerics, including deacons and seminarians • Daily Mass (missal of your choice), Holy Hour and Latin Compline
Scope: Holy Church is under attack and her priests are undermined.
Cost £320 in total (4 days full board single room with ensuite). BOOKINGS: send your £50 and/or full payment to:
About the preacher: For fifteen years Fr de Malleray has been giving clergy retreats at various venues in England and abroad. Based in the Liverpool Archdiocese, he is the author of ‘Ego Eimi – It is I: Falling in Eucharistic Love‘ [https://www.lumenfidei.ie/product/ego-eimi-it-is-i/]. His forthcoming book is on the sacred priesthood. He is the editor of the quarterly magazine Dowry, and general chaplain of the youth movement Juventutem and of the Confraternity of St Peter, an international prayer network for priestly vocations and ministry.
———————– In response to a priest’s enquiry: the retreat is not aimed at promoting the Extraordinary Liturgy in Latin. Fr de Malleray gives retreats to clergy every year. Their purpose is spiritual input for fellow priests, regardless of what form of the Mass they offer. In fact, most participants are diocesan clergy who say only or mostly the Ordinary Form of the Mass.
The themes are diverse: Year of Mercy, Year for Priests, The Priest and Our Lady, The Priest and Martyrdom, The Priest and the Eucharist.

(Merseyside Walk of Witness)
“I reckon we have been doing
our Merseyside walk for about 23 years now – or not far off it. We are a small
but determined group and every year in spite of the weather, the blisters and
the aching knees we always find plenty to keep us going – our friendships and
the people we meet along the way and of course our witness to the truth. We
know it has an impact on the strangers we encounter but we will never know how
much or if we have really made them people think!
This year it takes place this
Saturday 5th October starting at Parkfield Rd BPAS. We meet around 9am and
after a few prayers set off by 9.30am. If you can join us please bring a packed
lunch. Tea/coffee available at our lunch stop in Bootle. We end at St William
of York church, Thornton, usually around 3pm and there we are treated to lovely
refreshments provided by Fr Dunstan and Pat.
Please let me know if you can
make all or part of the walk – it would be lovely to have a few more people.”
