Ordination of Fr Phipps, FSSP Our gratitude goes first to His Grace Archbishop McMahon who, like last year, is coming to St Mary’s thrice within the same month for liturgy practice, ordination and confirmation.
Many thanks to the family and friends of our new priest Fr Seth Phipps, for their affection and support to him along his years of formation. Many more of our priests and seminarians wished to attend, but were prevented from doing so by our forthcoming General Chapter in America.
Thank you to all our parishioners who helped in so many ways to make yesterday’s ordination and today’s First Mass so special: liturgy; church cleaning; refreshments and Sunday picnic; pictures; LiveMass installation and filming; flower arranging; Health & Safety planning; booklets; preparing the garden; car park attendants.
Thank you also to those who provided accommodation to our visiting clergy and drove them from the airport and to the church. Special thanks to Fr Ian Verrier, Kathy Jones and our singers who have managed superbly despite our Music Director M. Wynne being on sick leave.
Thank you to all you who travelled from some distance to express your support and give thanks to God for the grace of yet one new priest. We are also grateful for the prayer of all of you watching this momentous event on our online channel LiveMass.
Last but not least, thank you to our seminarians who worked very hard to prepares the ceremonies, in particular Matthew, the main master of ceremonies (a Warrington Catholic, baptised in our parish at St Oswald’s)
Fr Phipps will give First blessings after the Sunday Masses.
Please join us for our community picnic in the Priory garden after the First Mass of Fr Phipps.

June 7, 2018
On Thursday, May 31st and Sunday, June 3rd (external feast), FSSP parishes across the District celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi, the ceremonies of which include a majestic outdoor procession with the Blessed Sacrament enthroned in the monstrance. This procession often involves halting for Benediction at several prepared altars, or “stations”, placed at intervals on the procession route. Sometimes the path is strewn with petals, and sometimes it is decorated with astounding artwork created with flowers or, as in the case of FSSP Dayton (see below), colorfully dyed wood chips. We took a virtual tour of the ceremonies, and we share with you below the beautiful things we found. Click on a picture in the gallery to see where it is from.

We have spaces left for girls aged 10 – 17 years-old on Summer Camp St Petronilla this August 13-18. Among much else, we invoke Our Lady, St Louis Marie de Montfort and St John Bosco to improve the spiritual eyesight of all participants. If you would like to know more about the camp or to request a booking form, please email us here. FLICKR albums from previous years’ camps can be viewed here: Girls 2017; Boys 2017; Girls 2016; Boys 2016.
Opening the Eyes of the Soul to See God
Believing that while Jesus walked in Israel He caused the blind to see by touching them, it is coherent to believe that He does the same now from Heaven through His new Body, that is the Church, specifically through His Saints in Heaven and on Earth. And if the scores of people who are physically healed at Lourdes is a sign of the countless thousands who are spiritually healed, so Don Bosco’s work with our Lady to restore the physical sight of a blind girl is surely a sign of their ongoing work to enable the spiritual sight (that is the Faith) of countless girls and boys today. If this were not possible, why would the Gospels recount to us Jesus having opened the eyes of the blind 2,000 years ago?
The passage below is taken from Saint John Bosco, Seeker of Souls by F.A.Forbes (1935), pages 93-93:
“The miracles of Don Bosco have remained famous. He was indignant when they were attributed to him. ‘I only tell people to invoke our Lady,’ he would say, ‘it is all her doing.’ When very hard pressed, and by obvious facts, he would sometimes admit: ‘Well, you see, we work together, she and I’…
Another day it was a blind girl who, led by two others, went to the church to pray, and afterwards asked to see Don Bosco. ‘How long have you been blind?’ he asked.
‘My eyes have been bad for some time, but a year ago I went completely blind,’ she answered, ‘the doctors say it is hopeless,’ and she begs to cry. Don Bosco led her to a window.
‘Do you not see the light?’ he asked.
‘Nothing at all.’
‘Do you wish to see?’
‘How can you ask such a question? I am a poor girl and my life depends on it.’
‘If you had your sight, would you use it for the good of your soul and for God’s service?’
‘Indeed I would!’
‘Trust in our Lady and she will help you.’
‘I know she will, but in the meantime I am blind.’
Don Bosco held a medal of our Lady before the sightless eyes. ‘What is this?’ he said.
‘I can see,’ cried the girl, ‘it is a medal.’
‘Whose medal?’
‘Our Lady’s.’
‘And on the other side, what do you see?’
‘An old man with a staff — oh, St Joseph!’
‘Holy Mother of God!’ cried the two women, ‘she can actually see!’
The girl dropped the medal which rolled into a dark corner of the room. One of them made a dash to recover it.
‘Let it alone,’ said Don Bosco, ‘let us see if our Lady has really given her back her sight.
The girl went straight to the corner and picked it up. She was beside herself with joy. Later on she became a nun in the religious Order founded by Don Bosco to do for girls what he himself was doing for boys…”

Corpus Christi Procession this afternoon: Sunday 3rd June, 3pm
Please do come and walk along with God.
Starting with our new parish patron Blessed James Bell, our martyrs died that we may be allowed to worship in the open, not in barns and attics anymore. Even now, in many countries, displaying the Catholic faith is punishable by death.
Let us honour our martyrs past and present! Let us offer our non Catholic fellow citizens the grace of encountering the Saviour along their very streets! Let us grow stronger in our faith through this public statement of Eucharistic love.
Plenary indulgence when attending.
Please arrive before 3pm to start on time. Bring flower petals in little baskets if you can, to spread before the Blessed Sacrament. The procession will last about 35 minutes, reaching St Albans at 3.45pm for Benediction; all ending at 4pm. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk back the shorter way to your car if left at St Mary’s.
!! Ordination minus 6 days !!
In but 6 days, Deacon Seth Phipps, FSSP will be ordained at St Mary’s, on Saturday 9th June 2018 at 11am, by Archbishop Malcolm McMahon. Thank you for your fantastic support last year. You set a wonderful precedent. Let us build up on our past experience and make this year’s ordination another success, please God. Please pray for Deacon Phipps and our other seminarians.
FOOD FOR NEXT SUNDAY’S FIRST MASS:
Please volunteer to bring food for our community picnic in the priory garden after the 1st Mass of Fr Phipps next Sunday. Please take TODAY plastic trays for this. Many thanks!

Homily given on Friday 25 May 2018 to the young adults of Juventutem at St Mary Moorfields in London.

Juventutem London
Fr Armand De Malleray, FSSP, presents a sermon on Christ healing the paralysed man. As the man enters through a threshold from without to within, we are invitedto contemplate the crossing of boundaries, that of the unborn into the world, and the spiritual migration of humanity towards God. The sermon is a rallying call to the faithful to defend life and preserve the journey of the most vulnerable in our society. And so too, are we called to lead those complicit in abortion on a journey of conversion to Christ. In this mission, we can take inspiration from the friends of the paralysed man who, finding the doors blocked, used roundabout ways, and lowered him through the roof into the presence of Our Lord. Likewise, this crossing of borders towards God will require not just direct action but also the supernatural means of prayer. Fr De Malleray concludes with a reflection on another permeated boundary, the pierced side of Christ, whose divine blood offers mankind the grace needed to cross the border from this world into the kingdom of heaven.

Irish Referendum: 66.4% of Irish voters chose infanticide.
We did not.
Here at St Mary’s, there was a total of 8 hours of Eucharistic Adoration Thursday night in advance of the Irish referendum on whether or not repeal Ireland’s 8th Amendment currently preventing abortion on demand. Many gathered for the Masses that preceded and ended the Adoration at 9pm. We were struck by the numbers who adored Our Lord till midnight and the fact that there was a constant 13 people adoring for the entire 8 hours.
This is a war against principalities of evil that despise God’s creation. We need to adore Our Lord, fast, have Masses said and pray daily the Holy Rosary as Our Lady of Fatima asked us to if we are to counter this culture or death which is trying to destroy the world and those therein. No prayer, no sacrifice will have been offered in vain. Reckoning will take place on Judgment Day. May Our Lady obtain God’s mercy for us and the Western world.
Thank God for 10 new priests ordained at our US seminary in Nebraska yesterday Saturday 26 May, by Archbishop Sample of Portland. Please pray for many more!
Please pray for those to receive their 1st Holy Communion at next Sunday’s Mass.
