PRIORY COURT CONVERSION: GEARING UP!
Further to the news that we have given the go ahead for the first phase of conversion work on Priory Court, you may have noticed the contractors are now on site. Whilst we aim to keep disruption to a minimum, some temporary changes are of course necessary and will affect the activities and groups currently using the building and safety across the site. An immediate impact is that parking has been significantly reduced so please consider alternatives such as the church carpark or the Cockhedge Centre (2 hours free) especially on weekdays when the neighbouring offices are also using the site.
Please ensure children are supervised and escorted at all times when crossing the car park from Priory Court to the church. Whilst deliveries will be kept outside busy periods, vans manoeuvring do not have the same visibility making pedestrian conflict more of a risk. Adults too should be vigilant of course.
All activities are now restricted to using Unit 1 with most having to re-locate to the top floor for the duration of the build. A smaller area will be kept operational on the ground floor for those unable to access the upper floor.
We are arranging TWO OPEN SESSIONS with plans and drawings available for your perusal plus the project team on hand to answer any questions. These will be held on:
Wednesday 8th Feb between 1-3pm downstairs in Unit 1, and
after the 11am Mass on Sunday 12th Feb, between 12.30 – 1.30pm.
The plans will also be on display in the narthex at other times so please come and see what the new hall will look like.
Further updates will be announced and published on the website so do keep a check for any changes. Thank you for your cooperation. As explained in the original announcement, there remains a funding deficit and whilst the focus of these events is to provide information and get feedback on the project, any suggestions for ongoing fundraising and further donations are equally welcome.
Thank you on behalf of SPUC for your generous support last Sunday for the White Flower appeal. You donated £344.66 to protect unborn children!

Ask the Ven. Elizabeth Prout for miracles!
She founded the female branch of the Passionists, who ran St Mary’s school for decades. In agreement with Archbishop McMahon her order wrote to us to promote her cause for beatification inviting us to request miracles:
1) through her exclusive intercession;
2) proven;
2) scientifically inexplicable;
4) cure instantaneous, perfect and lasting.

Homily at the Solemn Mass of Requiem for Pope Benedict XVI on 7 January 2023 in Warrington. Fr de Malleray expresses gratitude for the fruitful ministry of Pope Benedict XVI. He recalls his involvement in the founding of the FSSP as Cardinal Ratzinger; during the papal interregnum, his uncompromising diagnosis of the woes of the Church; his unexpected election to the sovereign pontificate; his support of the traditional Roman liturgy; and his successful visit in Great Britain in 2010. Adrian IV, The English Pope – Part 2
In this second instalment (continued from Dowry N°54, Summer 2022), young convert and historian Adam Mercer describes the life of the only English Pope so far, from his election onward. A courageous evangeliser in Scandinavia, Pope Adrian IV (Nicholas Breakspear) was caught into the never-ending political turmoil of the Middle-Ages, hindering his more fruitful theological activity.
Watching The Chosen?
Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP discusses the flaws and merits of a successful series on the life of the Lord Jesus. How to bring the Good News of salvation to young people, most of whom spend several hours online every day on social media and watching series? Despite some defects, the highly successful series The Chosen can be an opportunity for evangelisation. May it spur solid Catholics to become involved in making many more good faith films.
Refugees Find A Home In Catholic Tradition
Whereas Catholicism used to prosper in Hong Kong, it is now under threat as part of the alleged “Western” influence targeted by Communist China. Like many families of late leaving Hong Kong, this father-of-two describes his journey to faraway but freer England, and his providential discovery of the traditional liturgy.
Young Catholics Mourn Cardinal George Pell
The late Cardinal Pell supported the young adults of the traditional youth movement Juventutem from the beginning. Whereas Catholics honour the memory of the courageous prelate for numerous reasons, his paternal encouragements to young people attached to the liturgy of our fathers are treasured by the Juventutem International Federation, and by all those who see these traditions as a vital enrichment for the Church universal.
Art: Claude Lorrain’s Seaport by Sunset
Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP comments on a painting by Claude Lorrain, 1639, from Le Louvre, Paris. Claude painted various harbours, delighting in exquisite renderings of sunset and sunrise over the waters, ships and shores. Despite the absence of explicit religious elements however, Claude’s picture offers a meditation on the passing of time that spurs beholders to aspire to everlasting shores.

PRIORY COURT HALL CONVERSION to START next month.
Dear Shrine parishioners,
On Monday the 9th January, after months of hard work and many prayers offered, we were delighted to issue an instruction to proceed with Phase 1 of the conversion work on Priory Court. This will deliver the largest part of the alteration work, namely the opening up of the entire first floor to create a large but flexible church hall with a double height mezzanine to the middle section, lift access to all floors, disabled toilet and kitchen facilities.
The contractor is SW Projects Management Ltd, a local firm experienced in conversion and construction work and very keen to be involved with a project in their own local community. We have high hopes and expectations for a fruitful partnership with them and welcome their team to our site and community.
It is now over two years since we purchased the whole of the Priory Court buildings and have made good use of them since, but are constrained by their current configuration. The new facilities once finished will open up new and wide ranging opportunities for spiritual and pastoral growth in our Shrine community and beyond. Sadly, we are unable to commit to undertaking the entire scope of works in one go, as costs have risen sharply since the pandemic, but our intention remains to complete the full conversion (as approved by planning), including visitor accommodation on the top floor, in the not too distant future.
This will likely mean re-opening the Priory Campaign appeal nationally to complete Phases 2 & 3 at a later date, but more immediately, we are looking for ways to raise money within our own Shrine community to help plug a smaller gap in our funding for phase 1. This is currently around £40k but could be less should potential savings on the build be realised. If we are fortunate enough to raise more than this target, any surplus will naturally roll over into the funding for the remaining phases.
Whilst we appreciate we are all living in challenging times, we hope you feel able to join us in this challenge and would welcome any new ideas you might have for fundraising. After all, this project belongs to us as a community and is for the benefit of you and future generations here at St Mary’s.
Many newcomers to the Shrine will not be familiar with the original Priory Campaign, as fundraising closed in Oct 2020, so it is also an opportunity to promote the many merits of this project to a new audience and reinvigorate interest in those of us who have supported it from its conception and waited patiently for work to begin.
An open event will be held very soon to present more fully our plans for the building and how the building works will impact on our day to day activity and use of the wider site. We expect this phase to take around 4 months to complete with structural work beginning in February. We look forward to you joining us in this exciting development and sharing progress of this new facility for the Shrine.

New Shrine staff: We welcome as Secretarial Assistant every Wednesday morning Mrs Kelly Williams, who attends St Mary’s Shrine with her family. She brings a wealth of experience as a former parish secretary in another diocese, and can be contacted at stmaryssecretary@fssp.org. She will assist our Shrine Administrator Mrs Jane Wright, who remains with us working on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
On behalf of St Mary’s community, let our lay staff be thanked for their hard work behind the scenes.
Welcome home to our seminarians from the UK & Ireland on their post-Christmas break: in particular David from Warrington, and Tom, Conan and Benjamin. See great seminary pictures here: http://fsspwigratzbad.blogspot.com/.
New Year: two separate Plenary Indulgences applicable to oneself or to a holy soul in Purgatory can be gained by praying or singing in church: 1)The hymn Te Deum (Baronius p. 96) on 31st December in thanksgiving for the year past; 2) The hymn Veni Creator (Baronius p. 712) asking graces for the year starting.
In addition to performing the work (praying one of the two hymns above), the three usual conditions apply: 1) to be in the state of grace with no attachment to sin even venial, 2) reception of Holy Communion the same day, 3) to pray for the intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff. Please note that what is meant here is not the periodical intentions of the reigning pope published by the Holy See which one is welcome to pray at any time. For an indulgence, “intentions of the Sovereign Pontiff” means: the spiritual good of the whole Church, encompassing: the liberty and exaltation of the Catholic Church and the Apostolic See, the extirpation of heresies and the conversion of all who are in error, the concord of Christian Princes and the peace and unity of all the faithful.
Blessing of Epiphany Water on Thur 5th Jan: bring and drop by little organ before the 12:10pm Mass plastic containers filled with water and labelled to your name (to take home after) for the Blessing to begin right after 12:10pm Mass: lasting about from 1pm to 2pm.
Congratulations to Jack and Chelsey Rigby, a young couple who was received into the Church on 22 Dec after nearly a year of preparation.
Married one year, they are expecting their first child any day now.
Picture below: ritual blessing of an expecting mother.
Reminder: there is an ongoing stream of adults knocking at St Mary’s door to be instructed in the Catholic faith by our priests. If you know any, be sure to encourage them. Pray for the three adults ladies who have just started receiving instruction, and for more about to commit. Also pray for those received over the past year or more: that they may be deeply rooted in their Catholic identity, faith and practice.
Also, pray for four young adults who are having Marriage preparation to get married next summer, please God.
Thank you for your lovely cards, and generous gifts in cash and kind, and for your prayers. A very special thank you to all those who helped prepare this Christmas: church cleaners, singers and musicians, altar servers, flower arrangers and Christmas tree adorners, cooks, and more.
This past Christmas, St Mary’s Clergy offered 15 Holy Masses from midnight onward. You and your intentions were very much remembered at the altar.

CONFESSIONS: 24 Dec: 11:40am-12:05pm; 11:00pm-11:50pm;25 Dec: 10:30am-10.55am Kindly consider: ☞Attending Holy Mass at Christmas is a grave obligation for every able Catholic. ☞To receive Holy Communion: one must be a Catholic, in the state of grace, one-hour fasting at least. In the traditional liturgy, Holy Communion is received kneeling (unless unable to) and always on the tongue. Thank you in advance. ☞FSSP clergy do not retain Christmas and Easter collections for personal use. All Christmas collections will be used for the day-to-day running of St Mary’s Shrine (which includes the food, lodgings, pension allowance and salary of your priests). Should you wish to donate money to the clergy, kindly specify it on your envelope. ☞ What else to give our clergy? Thank you for your gifts in kind. If in bottles: red or white wines are best because they can be shared at meals on Sundays and feasts. Thank you! ☞ Most clergy will be on vacation from 25th Dec after Vespers. Kindly postpone all non-essential requests until Sunday 1st Jan. Daily Mass and confessions continue as normal.

Priory Court Project: please pray for an important decision to be made shortly, please God.
FSSP Superior General visits Warrington clergy: For the first time since the Covid interruption, Fr Andrzej Komorowski, FSSP was able to visit the priests at St Mary’s Priory in Warrington, as part of a customary triennial visitation of our houses in Reading, Warrington and Edinburgh. The Superior General spent time with every priest to hear how they are doing in community life and in their ministry.
On a further occasion, a meeting with the parishioners will be planned, but there was not enough time this week before Fr Komorowski flew back for a Council meeting in Switzerland – before flying to our parish in Nigeria where he will spend Christmas under a much, much warmer climate than we had here this week.
Fr Komorowski knows well our part of the world, having served in England in 2008 (London and Bedford), and having stayed many times in Ireland. Please pray for him and for all superiors.
Welcome to our seminarians on holiday from 26th December. We hope to catch up with David in Warrington. Please pray for many more priests! Visit https://fssp.org.uk/about-the-confraternity/
Sick priest: Fr Krzysztof Sanetra, FSSP, who was ordained in our church with Fr Stewart on 17 June 2017 was diagnosed with severe lung infection and remained in hospital in a critical condition for several weeks. Thankfully he is cured and about to return to Canada to resume his priestly ministry there.
Shrine expenses grow quicker than income. This is not surprising since our parishioners are affected by the economic difficulties. However, if you are in a position to contribute personally or to alert benefactors on our needs, even though they don’t live in Warrington, please share our bank account details below with them this Advent and Christmas.
Thank you for helping us through the Offertory collection and standing orders. Should any parishioner be in serious financial difficulty, let them contact the Shrine clergy confidentially.
Support St Mary’s Shrine: send your donation via our Donate page: https://fssp.co.uk/donate/. Ask us for a Gift Aid form to increase your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you. Gift Aid envelopes can be obtained from our Secretariat. Standing orders are easier and quicker for us to process than cash: Lloyds Bank; Sort Code: 30-80-27; Account number: 30993368. FSSP Clergy Gathering 21-23 Nov in Warrington:
The 10 FSSP priests from England, Scotland and Ireland gathered at St Mary’s Shrine last week for about three days of fraternal talks and prayer. A huge thank you to the ladies who generously cooked splendid meals for us.
Vocation Weekend: great success!
STANDING ROOM ONLY at the annual Vocation Discernment Weekend in Warrington last 25-27 Nov. 18 young men turned up (out of 20 booked), assisted by 4 priests and generous parishioners who cooked all the meals at Priory Court. Thanks to booklets especially printed for them, our guests were able to take part in sung Compline, Lauds and Vespers; as well as Low and Solemn High Masses and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
They attended 5 talks by the Shrine Rector on vocation in general, and life in the world vs life consecrated, Holy Mass and the priesthood.
Conviviality was an important aspect of the weekend, as well as silent prayer at the Shrine. All went for a walk with the priests on Saturday afternoon praying the Holy Rosary in the nearby Victoria Park, to the amazement of dog-walkers who had never seen 20 young men and clerics devoutly praying in public in the neighbourhood.
Shrine parishioners had been requested to pray for the visitors before and during the weekend, and were delighted to see so many young adults in the pews at Holy Mass.
Our heartfelt thanks to the ladies who prepared the many meals for the clergy and the laymen, and to the servers who made our private Masses and Solemn Vespers more prayerful. Please pray for these generous young men, that they might discern further with certainty the Holy Will of God on their precious souls.
Novena to Our Lady for Priory Court Project:Litany of Loreto after every public Mass from 30 Nov to 8 Dec inclusive. Please join in from home if you cannot attend. Start from now for 9 days if you read this after 30th Nov. Thank you.
Priory Court:Planning Permission was granted at last after a very long administrative delay. Sadly over the past two years, construction costs have risen so much as to make it difficult for us even to begin Phase One of the Conversion work, i.e. the Middle Floor Parish Hall all across the building, with lift. Please pray that our trustees might make the right decision shortly about this project which, by God’s grace, would equip us with much-needed space for our ministry.
Please pray for miracle benefactions!
SAVE MONEY easily: please keep all doors shut at St Mary’s Church and at Priory Court. With energy costs soaring, we as a community must make an effort not to waste heating in church and hall.
Please shut behind you the doors from Nave to Porch, Narthex, Lavatory, Cloister, Sacristy and of course, the doors from Porch and Cloister to outside.
Please do the same in Priory Court: the BLUE Front doors must be kept shut at all times when heating is on. Together, let us save money for better use.
Advent Donations: The overall Shrine income is diminishing. This is not surprising since our parishioners are affected by the economic difficulties. However, if you are in a position to contribute personally or to alert benefactors on our needs, even though they don’t live in Warrington, please share our bank account details below with them this Advent.
Should any parishioner be in serious financial difficulty, let them contact the Shrine clergy confidentially.
As usual, the Christmas collections in the FSSP are not retained by the clergy for personal use but applied to the ongoing expenses of the Shrine (which include Clergy expenses such as food, housing, private and transport allowance, retirement fund, health).
Thank you for helping us through the Offertory collection and standing orders. Support St Mary’s Shrine: send your donation via our Donate page: https://fssp.co.uk/donate/. Ask us for a Gift Aid form to increase your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you. Gift Aid envelopes can be obtained from our Secretariat. Fr Armand de Malleray reflects on the example given to England and further afield by the late Queen, and on the moral responsibility of leaders, especially Christian ones.
The Arundell Family and Catholic England
Richard Arundell looks back at what his family has endured for its fidelity to the faith of our fathers, thankfully retaining ownership of their magnificent chapel at Wardour, still in use.
Evolution and Conversion
Dr Rômulo Carleial, a biologist with a PhD in Zoology from the University of Oxford, writes about the theory of evolution as an elaborate circular argument against special creation.
Luisa de Carvajal: Would-be Saint and Martyr
Dominica Roberts introduces the Spanish noble lady whose hope to die a martyr for the love of Catholic England was nearly fulfilled in 16th-century London.
