The Catechism Explained by Fr. Spirago – published by Mediatrix Press
Brand new hardback copies now available for discounted purchase at St Mary’s shrine bookshop, Warrington: £20.00 per copy (instead of £28.00 on publisher’s website and £33.00 on Amazon).
Opening times: 12:20pm-1:00pm every Sunday. Pay with cash only, thank you.
At long last, the Catechism explained by Fr. Spirago is back in print. This edition is not a facsimile, but a full reprint with increased font size, and very minor updates to antiquated English. Some of the numbering has been redrafted to avoid confusion.
We already have so many catechisms, what do we need of another? We indeed have in abundance catechisms and religious manuals which appeal only to the intellect; books that do not aim at the warmth of expression and the fervent, persuasive eloquence which appeal to the heart, the force and vivifying power which affect the will through the influence of the Holy Spirit.
This Catechism aims at cultivating all the three powers of the soul: the intellect, the emotions, and the will. It does not therefore content itself with mere definitions. The idea in it is not to teach men to philosophize about religion, but to make them good Christians who will delight in their faith. Consequently questions of scholastic theology, doctrines debated among theologians, are either omitted altogether or merely receive a passing mention.
In this catechism, Fr. Spirago has endeavored to divest religious teaching of the appearance of learning, and to present it in a popular and simple form. Technical terms, in which almost all religious manuals abound, even those intended for children, are carefully eliminated from his pages since, while useful and necessary for seminarians and theologians, they are out of place in a book intended for the laity. Popular manuals of religion ought to be couched in plain and simple language, like that used by Our Lord and the apostles, easy to understand. What we need is something that will touch the heart and influence the will, not merely cram the mind with knowledge.
“The Catechism Explained by Spirago embodies the Catechism of the Council of Trent, yet contains fuller discussions for each point in the language that was developed by the Church, saints and theologians throughout time. Rather than being locked into a specific age or decade, this catechism is an explication of the faith in an almost timeless manner. It is a catechism that any subsequent generation could read and learn the essence of the Catholic faith.”

Looking back at three crises in Church history can help us overcome the current one: 1) The Arian crisis, when many bishops said Christ is not God; 2) The Clergy immorality crisis, when St Peter Damian had to tell the pope about widespread homosexuality; 3) The Rival Popes crisis, when good Catholics were made to choose between two or even three popes at a time.

This Lent we must give alms. Money is needed for various good causes. If not sure where your money given as alms will actually end up, you can also GIVE TIME. Great thing with giving time: we know exactly where we spend it, like outside this abortuary, praying peacefully for unborn children and for the opening of heart of anyone inimical to those tiny innocent ones. See you there this Lent. God bless you!

Pope Francis confirms the liturgical identity of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter Dear Friends, His Holiness Pope Francis has confirmed the liturgical identity of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter (see below). Deo gratias for such a response from heaven to your prayers! We note that: The meeting of the FSSP superiors with the Holy Father took place during our Novena of Preparation of Worldwide Solemn Consecration of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Further, the Decree confirming our liturgical identity is dated 11th February, the Feast of the Apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes, and the day of the Worldwide Solemn Consecration of the FSSP. Therefore, after God almighty our gratitude goes to the Immaculate Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The news was released on 21st February when First Vespers of the Feast of the Chair of Peter occur, it being a First Class Feast in our Fraternity. Thus we also must express our gratitude to our Patron St Peter the Apostle, and must pray further for his successor Pope Francis. In thanksgiving therefore, we invite you to attend Holy Mass tomorrow, especially if you live near an FSSP Mass centre. At St Mary’s Warrington Holy Mass will be sung tomorrow on Tuesday 22nd February at 12:10pm, followed by a sung Te Deum. We invite all who live at a distance to pray with us via LiveMass.net. Reminder for members of the Confraternity of Saint Peter: plenary indulgence tomorrow at the usual conditions. Although we all must pray further for any clergy and laity to benefit from the riches of the Roman traditions of the Church, the communiqué below must strengthen the hopes of all loyal Catholics.
Official communiqué of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter Published Fribourg, February 21, 2022 On Friday, February 4, 2022, two members of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, Fr. Benoît Paul-Joseph, Superior of the District of France, and Fr. Vincent Ribeton, Rector of St. Peter’s Seminary in Wigratzbad, were received in private audience by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for nearly an hour. During the very cordial meeting, they recalled the origins of the Fraternity in 1988, the Pope expressed that he was very impressed by the approach taken by its founders, their desire to remain faithful to the Roman Pontiff and their trust in the Church. He said that this gesture should be “preserved, protected and encouraged”. In the course of the audience, the Pope made it clear that institutes such as the Fraternity of St. Peter are not affected by the general provisions of the Motu Proprio Traditionis Custodes, since the use of the ancient liturgical books was at the origin of their existence and is provided for in their constitutions. The Holy Father subsequently sent a decree signed by him and dated February 11, the day the Fraternity was solemnly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, confirming for the members of the Fraternity the right to use the liturgical books in force in 1962, namely: the Missal, the Ritual, the Pontifical and the Roman Breviary. Grateful to the Holy Father, the members of the Fraternity of St. Peter are in thanksgiving for this confirmation of their mission. They invite all the faithful who feel close to them as a spiritual family to attend or join them in prayer at the Mass tomorrow, on the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, and to pray for the Supreme Pontiff.
Decree of Pope Francis confirming the use of the 1962 liturgical books The Holy Father Francis, grants to each and every member of the Society of Apostolic Life “Fraternity of Saint Peter”, founded on July 18, 1988 and declared of “Pontifical Right” by the Holy See, the faculty to celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass, and to carry out the sacraments and other sacred rites, as well as to fulfill the Divine Office, according to the typical editions of the liturgical books, namely the Missal, the Ritual, the Pontifical and the Roman Breviary, in force in the year 1962. They may use this faculty in their own churches or oratories; otherwise it may only be used with the consent of the Ordinary of the place, except for the celebration of private Masses. Without prejudice to what has been said above, the Holy Father suggests that, as far as possible, the provisions of the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes be taken into account as well. Given in Rome, near St. Peter’s, on February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, in the year 2022, the ninth year of my Pontificate. Francis

Presentation
The Academy is an essential part of our educational mission. Some of our families have children in ordinary schools. Others are home educators.
Our NEW picture album is here. (All pictures belong to St Mary’s Warrington Regina Caeli Academy.)
A growing number of parents nationwide are realising that the Catholic faith is not successfully passed on to their children at school. In no few cases, relativism and even immorality are inculcated to the little ones. Unsurprisingly, only a tiny minority of children still practice their Catholic faith in teenage and after.
How then can parents better fulfil their duties as primary educators of their children, they wonder? In conscience, most find that they should no longer send their children in such schools. For various reasons however, many parents rule out homeschooling as beyond their capabilities.
The Academy offers a viable solution: two full days taught by qualified teachers in the classroom, and another two days taught by parents at home following the RCA curriculum and material all laid out for them in advance. This leaves time to the mother for work or other activities, while children benefit from learning as part of a social group two days a week (Mondays and Thursdays). Extracurricular activities are being envisaged at St Mary’s if we have enough children interested, such as dance and football. In addition, parents who so wish can attend our Wednesday Home Education Group. The latter includes shared lunch after our daily 12:10pm Holy Mass, classes taught by a priest and by parents, junior Choir, recreations and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Some mums also enjoy our Monday morning Toddlers’ Group.
Educating the Saints of Tomorrow
Justin Bozzino, trustee of Regina Caeli Academy UK, presents the Regina Caeli Academies
Solution for Catholic education?
Regina Caeli UK is a centre for home educators enjoying pastoral support from the Fraternity of St. Peter. We meet on Mondays and Thursdays to offer a Classical curriculum to children, delivered by professional teachers in a classroom setting. On the other days of the week, parents receive lesson plans, supply lists and help from the tutors so all the children complete the same curriculum. In that way, we offer a hybrid solution to parents who are attracted to the flexibility of homeschooling but appreciate the community, support and accountability that comes from the academy days.
Regina Caeli UK is an affiliate of Regina Caeli in the USA, which has grown rapidly since its launch in the United States in 2003, and is now operating in 23 locations across the country, with thousands of children educated. The management of Regina Caeli have been extremely generous with their time and resources, and we are able to draw on a great deal of experience, which continues to prove invaluable. In particular, their curriculum, which is designed for the hybrid model, is excellent, and covers not just arts but the sciences too. Thanks to local expertise, we have been able to make the relevant parts more UK focused (think Thomas More rather than Thomas Jefferson).
RCA in the U.K.
A group of parents opened a centre in Bedfordshire in September 2019 and, thanks to the efforts of local laypeople and the FSSP, we opened another in Warrington in September 2021. By the grace of God, both centres are growing and thriving, attracting interest from potential families and tutors alike. In addition many families have moved to both Warrington and Bedfordshire because of the communities building up there, often basing themselves around the FSSP chaplaincies. That provides an ideal “ecosystem” for children, and also their parents, to grow and develop in the Faith.
Catholic chaplaincy
The FSSP provide chaplaincy to both the Bedford and Warrington centres. In Bedford, that means parent formation days, and monthly centre Mass, with altar server training and confessions for children and parents. In Warrington, being located at St. Mary’s shrine, the opportunity for daily prayer is open to RCA pupils, staff and prayer as well as daily Mass once the children are old enough. More generally, the Catholic ethos of the curriculum and all staff mean that children are given an ideal environment in which to flourish.
Qualifications
The Regina Caeli curriculum, along with every other Classical curriculum, follows the American system of examination. So, at the age of 18, pupils will gain a High School diploma and take the SAT tests – both a SAT Reasoning test and, if they wish, one or more Advanced Placement (AP) subject exams. Both SATs and APs are accepted by all major U.K. universities, but there is nothing stopping pupils from also taking UK qualifications should they so wish.
What parents say
Parents say that we give them a community of like-minded educators, providing practical and moral support to equip our children for the world of tomorrow using “the best that has been thought and said.” The children, moreover, appreciate the chance to have “class mates” with whom they can act in plays, play sports, and perform recitals of poetry and music.
What next
We continue to welcome applications to our Bedford and Warrington centres from those who would like to join as parents or as tutors; the deadline for those is 1st May 2022. Should you wish to know more, please get in touch or sign up via the website, www.rcahybrid.org.uk, or follow us on Facebook, where you can see some wonderful videos by the talented Peter Jones of “One of Nine.”
Meanwhile, please do keep the families, staff and trustees in your prayers as we attempt to give these children the very best education possible.
House-finding Novenato St Joseph: 24 Feb-4 March
A seventh family within the past 12 months is now moving to Warrington, from Berkshire this time. But finding a place to rent or buy is proving difficult. Let us pray together the Litany of St Joseph daily (after public Shrine Mass) for the Protector of Families to secure good homes for our newly arrived families and for more who wish to move here.
500 weekly visits to St Mary’s Shrine Church: half on weekdays and half on Sundays. Thank you, Cleaning Team!

Westerners in 2022 can learn from the heroic fidelity demonstrated by Catholic Poland during WWII and later. Hoping against hope, a generation of young Catholic men and women stood up for their faith and country both at home and abroad. We British and Irish Catholics must love deeper Christ, Our Lady, Holy Church and the saints; and gather together in order to save our souls in the present and forthcoming trials. At the heart of the current battle is the education of our little ones as God’s children.

Editorial: It Is Happening – St Mary’s Academy
Fr de Malleray explains why education is central to his Fraternity’s mission, now implemented through the hybrid Regina Caeli Academies in Bedford and Warrington. Four years after it was indicated as the aim of the successful Priory Campaign, the “Village Option” has become a necessity for families to survive and pass on the faith to their children.
Educating the Saints of Tomorrow
Justin Bozzino presents the hybrid model of the Regina Caeli academies, successfully adapted from America for UK families. He invites families to register for the Warrington Open Day on Saturday 5th March (11am-2pm): www.rcahybrid.org.uk/info.
Heroic Poles in the Battle of Britain
Richard Kornicki reminds us of the crucial role of Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain. Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command Hugh Dowding said: “Had it not been for the magnificent material contributed by the Polish Squadrons and their unsurpassed gallantry, I hesitate to say the outcome of Battle would have been the same”.
Young Women reflect on the Warsaw Uprising
Dowry asks two Polish young women settled in England how they relate to the heroism of a late fellow-Pole Cecylia Wolkowinska portrayed in her autobiography When the Summer Ended (written in collaboration with Joanna Bogle), from her youth in free Poland after WWI until the Nazi invasion of her country and the heroic uprising against the occupier in 1944. What inspiration, what lessons can young people in 2022 Britain learn from their heroic forebears fighting for freedom?
A Polish Army liberates Monte Cassino
Mark Kudlowski pays tribute to the determination of the Polish units who first reached the world-famous Abbey of Monte-Cassino eventually freed from Nazi occupation. Since Europe was civilised largely by the Benedictines stemming from Monte-Cassino, this victory over the anti-Christian forces of Adolf Hitler can inspire us in our third-millennium struggle for the Christian civilisation.
Elizabeth Prout, Mother Teresa of Manchester
Rosalind Starkie reviews Edna Hamer’s book on the Venerable Elizabeth Prout (1820–1864), Foundress of the female branch of the Passionist Order in Victorian England. A convert, Elizabeth Prout brought solace, education and hope to many women, girls and families suffering under inhuman conditions in the slums of Manchester during the Industrial Revolution.
A Bigger God
James Gillick shows that modern telescopes have given men a better idea of the magnitude of the cosmos. This humbles the wise, but terrifies the proud. They react with violence and manic ambition at the expense of true culture and spirituality. Christian artists and thinkers must depict anew the splendour of the Saviour for the benefit of mankind.
Meditations on the Stabat Mater
Religious superiors and theologians express their interest for the medieval liturgical sequence displaying the sufferings of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday. A commentary on the Stabat Mater just released by CTS can be a good companion for the forthcoming Lent.
Dowry is the quarterly magazine of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter in the UK & Ireland. Since its inception in 2008, the magazine has published dozens of articles on topics as diverse as theology, family life, education, the sacraments, Church Magisterium, art, politics, literature, cinema, spirituality, liturgy and more.
We welcome submissions of articles, poetry, pictures and drawings if deemed compatible with our traditional Catholic scope. Any submission must be by email to malleray@fssp.org with (small) attachments in digital format. We cannot guarantee to answer, let alone publish, each and all submission. Thank you for your interest. Contact us to be sent bulk quantities of Dowry for dispatching among your friends and acquaintances, especially if you are part of a parish, or a community or some other institution.

Congratulations to Fr Gerard Quirke who is starting this month as a Postulant to join the FSSP. Clergy and congregation welcome him as part of the St Mary’s Shrine, where he has been assigned for the foreseeable future. Following formation at Maynooth Seminary in Ireland, Fr Quirke was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Tuam in 2018. After some time of discernment, he sought permission from his Archbishop to try his vocation with the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter. FSSP Superior General Fr Andrzej Komorowski assigned him in Warrington, and local Ordinary Archbishop Malcolm McMahon OP of Liverpool granted him pastoral faculties.

Every Catholic must receive Holy Communion at least once a year, preferably at Easter; following Sacramental absolution.
Confessions times: kindly come as advertised, not later.
While as you know we clergy do our very best to answer your needs for this sacrament generously even outside of the advertised times, we also are sometimes left without penitents for a while during those times. You will help the smooth running of the many Shrine activities if you do your utmost to come during advertised times. Daily-Mass-goers are kindly requested to come to Confession on weekdays rather than on Sundays, leaving more time for penitents who can only travel here on Sundays. Thank you.
