Like all Catholics we pray for the repose of the soul of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who died on 8th September. Since her platinum jubilee we had started offering at her intention the traditional Prayer for the Sovereign after the main Sunday Mass. We will henceforth pray for King Charles III (cf Baronius missals p. 1604). O Lord, save Charles our King. R. And hear us in the day when we call upon Thee. Let us pray. We beseech Thee, almighty God, that Thy servant Charles our King, who has been called by Thy mercy to rule over this kingdom, may also receive from Thee an increase of all virtues. Fittingly adorned with these, may he be able to shun all evildoing and, finally, being well pleasing before Thee, together with his consort and the royal family, attain unto Thee who art the Way, the Truth and the Life. Through Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.

All must dress modestly in church out of reverence for God and of respect for fellow-worshippers. Ladies are encouraged to wear a veil or mantilla. Tops must cover bodies down to elbows and skirts at least below knees. No shorts, no t-shirts, no leggings. In addition, on Sundays and feasts Sunday best should be worn by all: i.e. suits or jackets and ties for gentlemen, dresses for ladies. Thank you.
ATTENTION: PLEASE NOTE:
The dress code notice above has been on this newsletter for a year. A good number of parishioners have heard the call to Sunday best. We thank them on behalf of all. If you are not yet among those, you are politely asked to consider wearing a suit (or jacket) and a tie (gentlemen), a dress (ladies) on Sundays and main feast. Thus, wearing just a shirt with open collar is better than a t-shirt, but still too casual. Dressing up on Sundays and main feasts is part of normal Catholic culture and worship. We are aware that it has been lost in many quarters of modern society. But it is part of the same values that you seek at St Mary’s. Therefore it is expected at St Mary’s Shrine. Please note that your clergy does the same: wearing better cassocks and sashes and shoes on Sundays, and more precious vestments in the sanctuary. You in the nave are naturally to be included in this shared expression of reverence and joy for the Day of the Lord. As we begin a new pastoral year, let us make a good fresh start.
Thank you for your fraternal cooperation.
To receive Holy Communion: one must be a Catholic, in the state of grace, one-hour fasting at least. In the traditional liturgy, Holy Communion is received kneeling (unless unable to) and always on the tongue. Thank you in advance. Kindly switch OFF your mobile phonebefore you enter the church.
Safeguarding: If you have concerns about children or vulnerable adults, please contact the Archdiocesan Safeguarding Department: m.robson@rcaol.org.uk or 0151 522 1013, or speak with Clare Fraser, St Mary’s Safeguarding Officer. Thank you for your awareness.
Fr Gwilym Evans writes: Thank you so much to all who assisted at my First Mass at St Mary’s last month and to all those who so generously contributed to the collection for me. The total amount was an overwhelming £1250: a demonstration of the extraordinary kindness that you have shown me over the past months. I am also extremely grateful for the spiritual support that you have offered me, as I was preparing for ordination — for your many prayers and sacrifices. Please continue to pray that I may be a holy priest. I shall remember you all fondly in my prayers, and especially at the Altar. You and your friends are all very welcome to my First Mass in Wales at St Alban’s Church, Cardiff, on 17th September.

Six young men from the UK & Ireland are in formation at our two international seminaries. Three of our deacons from England were ordained priests at St Mary’s Warrington by Archbishop McMahon, OP of Liverpool. Those were the first EF priestly ordinations by a diocesan bishop in England in fifty years. Please pray for them (www.fssp.org/en/help-us/confraternity-of-saint-peter/) and for many more to enter the lists! We give thanks for 12 of priests ordained over the past 20 years: Fr Konrad Loewenstein in 2002; Fr Brendan Gerard in 2006; Frs Matthew Goddard and William Barker in 2009; Fr Simon Harkins in 2010; Fr Matthew McCarthy in 2011; Fr Ian Verrier in 2015; Fr James Mawdsley in 2016; Frs Alex Stewart and Krzysztof Sanetra in 2017; Fr Seth Phipps in 2018; Fr Gwilym Evans in 2022.
THE X-MEN?
As of September 2022, for the first time the number of FSSP priests serving in the UK & Ireland has reached a double figure: Fr Patrick O’Donohue in Waterford, Frs Brendan Gerard and John Emerson in Edinburgh, Frs Armand de Malleray, Ian Verrier, Alex Stewart and Gerard Quirke in Warrington, and Frs Matthew Goddard, Seth Phipps and Gwilym Evans in Reading. Thus, it is now ten priests in total (“X” in Latin) serving souls in these Isles. There will be work for many more!
Congratulations to Amaya and Kayleb who will be baptised on Sat 17th Sept at 4pm. We assure them and their family of our prayer.
Congratulations to Joshua and Samantha Langley on the baptism of their second child Olivia on 4th September.
Thank you to all of you who supported the March for Life on 3rd September in London. Over 7,000 pilgrims attended, a record number, including about 40 from St Mary’s only. Thank you to those who gave of their time and money for that cause; to those who sponsored pilgrims; and to all of you who responded to our call and made sure to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament that same day, praying specifically for the success of the March for Life and the protection of unborn children.
Thank you for helping us through the Offertory collection and standing orders.

Fr de Malleray comments on the fear felt by many souls confronted with growing uncertainty in the Church and secular pressure from the world
The English Pope (Part One)
While another English cardinal has just been created, young convert and historian Adam Mercer describes the rise to prominence of one Nicholas Breakspear, who later become the first (and latest) English pope.
Homily for First Mass of Fr Gwilym Evans, FSSP
Fr de Malleray welcomes the newly ordained priest as he begins his pastoral ministry in England. Fr Evans is reminded of being a man of the sacred, better to serve souls, including the most vulnerable ones. Diligence and love for God, especially in the Blessed Sacrament, conditions a fruitful priestly life.
Can A Catholic Wear Tattoos?
Niall Patrick Carroll reflects on Fr Mike Schmitz’s “Awesome Tattoo”. Why this recent trend of tattoos, now spreading even among Catholics? What criteria help one discern whether tattoos are bad, indifferent or positive? Our souls are where the divine imprint should show, now and forever.
Mgr Benson’s Novels on Catholic Persecution
The newly started Cenacle Press at Silverstream Priory in Ireland has released a beautiful illustrated edition of Mgr Hugh Benson’s classic novels describing the persecution of Catholics in England under penal times. A timely reminder and an encouragement as genuine religious freedom is under threat even in Western countries.
The Sacred Liturgy as a Secret Garden
In his latest and short book, Fr de Malleray offers an analogy between Frances Hodgson Burnett’s pre-WWI tale for children and the revelation experienced in the 2020s by a growing number of adults stepping into the grace-filled haven of the traditional Roman liturgy.

The well-known children’s story The Secret Garden lends itself to a religious and modern interpretation. Like orphaned children in desperate need of spiritual comfort, many Catholics discovered the traditional Latin Mass thanks to the Covid pandemic. Thirsting for Confession, for Eucharistic adoration, or for Holy Communion administered with reverence, they rejoiced when finding all this and more in traditional worship. This book offers an analogy between Frances Hodgson Burnett’s pre-WWI tale for children, and the revelation experienced in the 2020s by a growing number of adults stepping into the grace-filled haven of the traditional Roman liturgy.
Praise for The Sacred Liturgy as a Secret Garden
A very clever treatment of the novel The Secret Garden. That well-known children story should be read twice—firstly, as any reader would read it just for enjoyment, and then again after reading Fr de Malleray’s fascinating hermeneutic of tradition, because the enjoyment and appreciation would be much greater. —Leo Darroch, former President of the International Federation Una Voce
An imaginative essay, whose poetic nature is a timely invitation to rediscover the forgotten riches of the Church’s traditional liturgy. —Fr Simon Henry, BA MA, Director of St Peter’s International College
This essay is intriguing, creative and sufficiently provocative to maintain the reader’s interest. The variety of expression is refreshing. Readers of all ages will enjoy discovering the liturgical treasures that lie hidden in the Secret Garden. —Fr Neil Brett, former head teacher
